0800 number provider that allows transfer out

Greetings All,

I am starting up a new business and looking out for a telecoms provider selling 0800 numbers and providing a decent competitive service. I have seen plenty of them around with really good packages etc. - Problem is that I cannot find anyone who will allow me to transfer /port the number out if i decide to change to another supplier. While being ok to sign up for a contract period, I am uncomfortable with the thought of having my primary contact channel tied up in an endless "no way out" contract.

Anyone come across a company that allows transfers? Replies appreciated.

Slightly off topic, but an 0800 number would be a mistake for your business, IMO.

I am planning to also have a local number but also wanted to give customers an option of calling free. The plan is brand the service correctly.

I market a lot of trade and service based businesses, and the feedback we always get from target market research is that an 0800 number is trusted less and is seen as less personal than just having a local number.

You're right to be concerned, most small number providers can't/won't transfer your number (it's actually called number porting.)

If you used VoIP to do it you need to choose a service provider that's a member of ITSPA - they have a code of practice that allows porting between members. Even so it's not always possible, the process is horrible to set up and work.

We can port numbers. 0800 numbers cost £4.99 pm and 3p per minute for the incoming call. It's not a cheap way of doing it - is there a particular reason why you need an 0800?
