Better than suggesting a piece of tat technology that wouldn't benefit the business! What's your problem?

But this is exactly the point, it most definitely isn't better. Spending £500 on leaflets or local paper ads will not generate any sales for an online retail site, whereas buying a piece of tat like an iPad will at least leave the OP with a useful piece of tat.

My problem is that I have seen far too many ecommerce start-ups given nonsensical advice by clueless advisers who have no experience in the field and no business giving such advice. So do feel free to give your poor advice, and I will feel equally free to clearly explain why this advice is erroneous.

My opinion is welcomed on here as yours, you may be a more established member but it doesn't give you the right to shout down at others.

I'm assuming you've had bad experience with my points I showed, you could of just said that, and give reasons why its a waste of money.

As for my "poor advice" I don't see how it's poor, i've helped promote my brothers e-commerce site with offline marketing before and it was quite a successful campaign, this is why i suggested the points I did.

of course your opinion is welcome, and I'll spend all night explaining why you're wrong if necessary.

I bet it wasn't successful. Unless your brother's site sold a product or service locally, I bet you wasted his money but managed to convince yourself that the campaign provided a good RoI.

Why are arguing when we are supposed to be helping this woman/man with their buisness.

I believe my marketing for his site was succesfull, you don't need to argue whether it is or it isnt, when you haven't seen the turnover after the month of the campaign, especially when you don't know what the business is.

Because you're giving her exactly the kind of poor advice which causes people in her positin to waste time and money on things that can't possibly work.

Do feel free to enlighten me. I know 4 people who have run leaflet campaigns for online retail, with no return whatsoever. I also know around a dozen people who have run local paper ads, with the same results. I have data from multiple campaigns which gives me the confidence to say that these methods do not work for online retail.

His campaign was on a MUCH larger scale with a much larger budget. This is completely irrelevent, feel free to pm me if you're that interested in his campaign, but I do not wish to carry on in this thread as it is no help to the thread author.

No, let's keep it in the thread, this amazing knowledge of local paper campaigns that can generate sensible RoI for ecommerce sites would be very helpful to many people on here.

His campaign was national magazines, not local. I never said his were local.

So why did you feel that this knowledge justified your advice to the OP that she should spend £500 on a local paper ad?

Spending other people's money is so easy, isn't it. You are happy to confidently advise them that it's the right thing to do, but you have no basis for this advice.

Spending other people's money is not something i've ever done. They spend their own money on services or marketing they want.

Give up on the "local paper ad" £500 could still buy a small advertisement in a national magazine. I know I didn't put that, but was just thinking local awareness for them.

Why did you feel that buying an iPad is good advice? Surely if there's nothing on my list of things, they should save their money...

I don't see any point replying in this thread anymore, as I said if you wish to discuss my brothers marketing campaign with me, or any other campaigns i've done, please feel free to email me or PM me.

One of your other points in the thread is very valid, I thought it was good advice. I don't see the point in highlighting my reply though, there was no need for a 20 post discussion about it.

The point is that there is almost nothinng you can do for £500 which is worthwhile for this sector. Look, why don't you go back to the start of the thread and read all my posts, you'll understand it better.

I much prefer to discuss things on the forum, that way everyone can benefit.

You could of just said that :)

Fair enough, it is better that others can see I guess.

I'm off to do some work, enjoy the rest of your evening.

I've just spend the last 10 minutes reading through your posts (both of you) and can conclude that they are nowhere near to benefit anyone, annoy is the word I would use...

You could of just said that

It's COULD HAVE SAID not COULD OF SAID!!!

"I've just spent!!

Hah.. Thanks Taj.. well spotted, I did it on purpose;)

A few commas would help too

Given that English is my second language commas is the last thing I would worry about:)
But mistakes like OF and HAVE? well, you judge...

Hows the entrepreneur doing?
Pretty good actually, thanks for asking:)

Matt - your signature doesn`t make sense
"Entrepreneurship and Small Business" by Paul Burns and it will all make sense ;)

seen as we`re posting random criticisms
I was just thinking the same thing...

what happened to the doormat business?... never heard anymore about it
Not as well as I would have hoped tbh. Emailed a couple of wholesalers and only 2 interested. Too much uni work and don't really have time for this...

or the student magazine.. was it a goer?
Just for the record.. it's a uni project. And yes, half of the business plan is already written. I'll email you the copy when it's done:)

In that case.. you should not be criticizing others... should you?

Still.. interested to know about your entrepreneurial exploits... the doormat business , the student mag etc..

Did you actually end up starting any business?

You sure you are in Uni?

I know exactly where you're going with this.. so No, I'm not one of those people who spend their lives on UKBF posting about their imaginary businesses..

Anyway.. I'll answer your question... YES, I'M AT UNI.. STUDYING ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE DEGREE AT UNIVERSITY OF BRIGHTON, I AM ON MY SECOND YEAR, COMPLETED FIRST YEAR WITH FIRST AND SCHOLARSHIP and if you're really so passionate to find out whether or not I'm saying true PM me and I will brief you more...

I cannot match the business advice, only give you my impressions about your site.
It has improved a lot since last time I looked.

But I think you should prune somethings, do you need the Free guide for instance ?
"Awesome accessories" link contain Bags only, why not call it Awesome Bags ? Your Accessory link the same, call it Bags.
Nail care leads nowhere.............In Cosmetics your first product, Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish, is priced at zero pounds (I shall take a dozen)
Some of your links have no images, and some don't enlarge.

What I am saying is your site needs a tidy up, get a friend to sit and rip it apart.....in a nice way.
I know the person that builds the site can get too close to it, and is happy with what works, and can overlook the shortcomings.....you just want someone else to see it with a new pair of eyes.
And make a list, then tick them off as you alter things.

Keep it up you are getting there.

Am glad about that:)

At least you admit you are in Uni...my.. a scholarship no less:)

So.. hopefully you will one day start a business..

and also learn to be able to handle yourself better.... you don't have to shout ... empty vessels etc.. come to mind.

But... just to make a point... you have spent a lot of time posting about your imaginary business... but no matter.

Good luck for the future!

It's funny when it comes out of your mouth. I wasn't shouting.. more like smiling. You on the contrary should learn how to give people constructive criticism instead of having a go at someone without any apparent reason.

But... just to make a point... you have spent a lot of time posting about your imaginary business... but no matter.
I spend a lot of time in general reading, posting on forums and talking to people about any kind of business. I've good a lot of ideas some of them better than other and UKBF it's to developing those ideas. Only thing I'm disappointed with is that I keep arguing with someone so arrogant who clearly spends half of his day (5.16 posts/day) giving pointless criticism to people.. I personally believe such people should be banned from UKBF.. but again.. that's just me.

Good luck for the future!
I think we already were there? but still here you are again. Well.. Good Luck!

Is this the best you can come up with!...

Don't like getting caught out with fibs?....

Guess you should also change your sig line...Owner-Manager: Definitely... | Entrepreneur: Hopefully!:D... cos you are neither.. more fibs..

Stick to Uni..if thats true... " Accounting and Finance degree"...scholarship.. whatever that means.

Either that or it must be the Easter break from school.:D.. who knows!

But whatever... :D:p;)

Here is a quick initial idea, it may be good it may be a complete waste so you'll have to work out if its viable yourself.

Start a Facebook club(?) asking who's up for a public meeting, to be held in due course. All followers wishing to attend need to wear fancy dress that will be supplied to them either for FREE or for a very cheap cost as to encourage more people getting involved. This will get people talking about your business with its new and seemingly unique ideas, get you in contact with the kind of people that would wear fancy dress, the local newspapers should be contacted as I'm sure they'd love to get involved if there is 10 Elvis Presleys walking the streets - Local exposure in the papers.

This was a very quick idea so I hav'nt thrown it around just yet to see the flaws, but other than some hard work your only really increasing your stock, something you'd normally have to do anyway.

I didn't have to come up with other more "creative" descriptions of you as those few words describe you perfectly.

Stick to Uni..if thats true... " Accounting and Finance degree"...scholarship.. whatever that means
The fact that you don't know what that means says something about you;) so how difficult was it to finish GCSEs? You struggled?

Do all these comments help you to improve your self-esteem? If so I can continue like this forever. Or do you simply do because you hate your daily job and you get kick-out of it? ;)
