Hi Everyone, Hope your all well.

Basically I currently have a very small Ecommerce website powered by EKM which I use to earn pocket money through engraving.

I like this because the security and backend maintenance is done by them, plus being an engraver I need a versatile options/variations system for each product and EKMs is one of the best ive come across. Though its quite expensive for what I am getting out of it, it is a price im willing to pay at this point.

I am very technically minded and am also aware of the pitfuls and problems such linear website hosting solutions have. But for now its serves my purpose.

However, Im also employed by a small Limited company as an engraver (yes my boss is very aware of my additional personal work) and there is a possibility that in the next 2 to 3 years I could buy up the stock of this company.....my boss, the only other person involved is in his 60s and entering retirement age....im in my 30s.....so if the opportunity arose....and its very mush high up in discussion.... I want to take it.

There are also other more immediate issues which would require me to get a slightly bigger income from my EKM site.

With this in mind I feel i must up my game and prepare myself for the possibility I might need my website to make me much more money in quite a short space of time at some point.

Im planning to do more Blogs/Social media over the next few months and build a fund for Advertising and other marketing, so if the above did take place I can roll it into action pretty sharpish.

However Im wondering what other web/ecommerce solutions I could consider....SEO is a weakness of mine (I find it hideously boring, but necessary....would consider out sourcing this) and EKM can't do things like simple URLs etc....as Mentioned EKM do variations/Options on products well, but for an engraving website a bespoke system would perhaps be better.....there are certainly many improvements I could suggest to make EKMs system better.

Would it be worth saving for a full bespoke made to order website?.....This worries me because the amount of work/money involved...plus the bit im less comfortable with is updating things like php and security issues......I have managed a Zencart site before and became a cropper at that point.

What other platforms allow complete design freedom and don't have the SEO limitations but also means you don't have to be a computer scientist to keep it maintained (unlike Zencart back in the day).

Should I just not worry about it for now and just really tighten my EKM site up, pump money into my advertising fund and see what the future brings?

Many Thanks for your input.

John

What are your actual needs for an engraving business? Do people have preset products they can click "buy now" on and then choose the engraved text or do they have to email you for every order?

Personally I'd be tempted to take the self-hosted route to cut down on costs and maximise control, but I can appreciate you'd rather have something that works out of the box. Have you taken a look at Shopify? It has similar features to EKM but allows for more control in regards to URLs and SEO. I'm sure other members here will know of other platform-based solutions too.

All the best!

Thanks for your reply Nathan.

Basically its abit of both if I was to merge my Employers stock and my own work together.

My Employer has gone for the Saturated 'basic' market.....take an Item and engrave your name/.message here for Free.....or with an addon cost...depending on item. I would continue this aspect and EKM Is perfect for this.....apart from its SEO and backend limitations.

My own personal stuff, due to the fact I didn't want to compete completely on the same level as my Employer, ive gone for a more 'premium' market. Where I draw quite detailed Engravable images, engrave them on items and sell at a decent price, pushing the artwork as the main selling point rather than the item itself .... however I am also trying to offer a more personal service. Live chat on my site, encourage the customer to contact me to discuss requirements and ideas and come up with a truly bespoke item. This is where EKM falls down as their features are quite limited.....for example I wanted a listing where I have a base item (Hip flask, card holder etc) a big text box with what it is the customer wants exactly and image attachment....they then press a 'get quote' button....which sends me their details to which I can work out and come up with something to their spec...before going back to them and so on. EKM Template/backend limitations don't allow this.

Ill check out Shopify in the meantime.

Many Thanks,
John

we moved from EKM after 4 years to Shopwired in 2016 - EKM were ok to begin with but do not offer a responsive website system and over 60% of our customers purchase on a mobile device.

Have you tried some of the excellent programable iframes from JotForm - you could easily create a QUOTATIONS page which allows customers to add text and images and then send to you via email before buying anything - so simple to do

Shopwired is excellent and with a couple of live on-screen 3rd party project builder plug ins does just the job we need for our business.

It sounds like your business would have a great opportunity for upsets/downsells depending on what the customer would like. Have you considered using any sites like Clickfunnels? they're much more powerful than a website, essentially walking the customer through a process where they choose their different options and give them opportunities to complement their choices with further purchases.

Hi John, slightly different take on your question. You have identified what you want - to make more money - but you have not identified what is stopping using business from currently doing this. It might seem tempting to change your website platform, but if you don't understand why your business isn't earning twice as much as it is, you could make yourself into a busy fool changing platform or doing ineffectual SEO. Best of luck.
