Unfortunately there are a number of freight companies that charge punitive demurrage charges. They see this as a way to make huge profit out of the misfortune of others. These charges have no relation to the costs they are paying whether or not they are using a third party warehouse.

Shipping from China is currently running OK although some shipping lines are scaling back on sailings. Could mean the shipment arrives a week later than anticipated but nothing major.
The rail freight option from China handles both FCL and LCL now. Whether it is cost effective or not will depend on the origin point of your shipment. I have LCL shipments sitting in my warehouse now that came in by rail without any major issues.

If you are planning on shipping a part load from China my recommendation would be to ensure you ask the supplier for a quote on FOB terms (and not C+F). This means you will be able to arrange the shipping in the UK. If the supplier arranges the shipping in China you will be charged very high...
There could potentially be issues of liability if a 40' container container is part loaded by one supplier and goes to the second supplier to be finished off. What would happen if some of the goods loaded by the first supplier got pilfered or damaged whilst the container is at the second...
