Sorry about your bad experience on alibaba. I would agree with you, if you can get to China yourself to check out your suppliers, do so. Failing that, try finding a partner or business in China that can act on your behalf.
Coincidentally, our business does just that... :)
Hi Preciousbags,
If the goods value is just approx 500£, you can try DHL, UPS if the wight is not very heavy, DHL/UPS/FEDEX are door-to-door service, then you can ask your supplier to quote EX.W.
I can caculate the cost by DHL/UPS/Fedex for you if you have the weight, volume of the goods.
I'd have to agree with J-Wholesale on this, it does indeed sound very suspect.
If you can foreward me some details of who you are dealing with, etc, I'll have a nose around and see if I can find out anything about them. But as others have said, you're going to really need a reliable agent, or...

Lots of good advice on this thread, as usual seek all the advice you can and then ignore two thirds of it. Like yourself, I was once very reticent about haggling, but...

I find Skype, and IM software in general, very useful for doing business. Working here in China, you really need QQ - absolutely everybody here has a QQ number, and it has some useful functions such as the ability to send files to a user who is offline. I don't completley trust it, though, as in...
I'd announce my win to the public by buying a Porsche and then driving it at high speed into my rose garden. I'd leave it there, and passers-by would say 'look at that mad bar steward, he won the lottery'. Of course, I'd also have an electrified fence and a shotgun...
Hi gglml, drop me a line and I'll see what we can do to help you: we specialise in sourcing goods form China, and we've a few contacts manufacturing electronics and components.
Cheers,
