Is the thank you system here a waste of time?

Naturally, it is at moments like this, we should look inside ourselves and consider where that "smurf" we swallowed as a kid went.

I am often bemused....err...

Let me rephrase that...I am often bemuddled and I don't use the word bemuddled lightly, so if you see a hefty bemuddlement it is possibly of my doing, not to say I did the bemuddlement just confused myself over the creation and blame myself in a manner that is less than certain.

Let me start again....Antelope have ears, which is great if you are Antelopian or needing to have a quiet word with an Antelope but hopeless if you are in a situation where you need a deaf little Rudolf to hide your Christmas secrets...

A long time ago I was sat in the woods with a huge pile of wood when an elf came and sat beside me...

Elf - It is almost Christmas
IP2 - You are almost who?
Elf - Christmas!
IP2 - Shikes which part are you?
Elf - I am Chris.
IP2 - Look I am in a lonely forest
Elf - Not so lonely now
IP2 - I guess this is going somewhere?
Elf - When does your business insurance run out?

I would like to thank the elf for amazing insurance quotes and for dying so convincingly.

Elf - I am alive
IP2 - shhhsshh! Think of tomorrow!

Hi Darren

Glad to see you have a sense of humour but wouldn’t you agree the OP makes a very valid point? – one which this thread has reinforced.

The ‘Thanks’ system has become a sort of Facebook-esque-poke-love-hug system. Nothing wrong with that if that’s the direction you want to take this forum but personally I think a business forum would be a bit more credible with a rather more formal system (or none at all).

I have to say this system is my least favourite of the changes that Sift has introduced.

Regards

Hi Dotty,

Absolutely, I just saw what was going on in the thread with everyone thanking everyone and very much saw the funny side.

I really would like the system to be used for what it's there for, of course, and it was put in place after a few members requested some sort of rating system. vBulletin only allows you to rate whole threads, rather than individual posts, hence using the 'Thanks' add-on.

I'm very happy to look at alternatives if you think the 'Thanks' system is a little unsophisticated.

Cheers,
Darren

It's obviously hard to please everybody and I am happy to go with the majority. I don't really know what the answer is but I think any rating system should try and reflect the quality of the posts. As someone pointed out any newbie trying to search for valuable information by browsing 'Thanked' posts is soon going to get disillusioned.

I think 'stickies' are a good idea. Maybe there could even be a section for useful threads that have been nominated by forum members. Whatever system is used I feel it should present value to the forum.

Anyway thanks to those that thanked me! (even if it was in jest!) Sorry to so sound like a bah-humbug. :)

Regards

Dotty

Feeling a little confused... how did i get into the feed back and help section....i normally just surf the general business section or chat.....8 pages later i find my self here.....ouch feeling a little dizzy again. I usually thank people that help me in personal pms or email but i think its nice to do it publically as well. So thank you for all the useful advice and information that I have got so far from the forum since joining. :)

Funnily enough ... just this morning I received a phone call from a Grandparent of a child that used to be a patient of mine, ( in my previous speech & language therapy life ) saying that her Grandson had just taken his first speaking role in the school Nativity and he was brilliant ... and she wanted to make a special effort to thank me for helping him to develop his speech & language. I am absolutely thrilled that she made the effort to call me - even though I discharged him a year ago! So - I feel 'thanks' is very important. It is nice to receive a personal thanks ... but sometimes when time is short ... it's nice to be able to hit a button!
Good grief I've waffled on there!:)

The thanks system is daft, sorry Sift boys but it is.

You could probably get more thanks running around the boards offering Tea and sympathy than you could trying to give objective advice.

Hitting a button is a poor substitute for posting a thanks in the thread or sending a PM to someone.

Thank you

:)

Here, here.

And many people help via PM or off the forum completely. Surely newbies soon realise who the helpful/knowledgeable members are if they stick around for more than a week or so?

Very true Hayles.

I have seen you make many helpful posts over the years but you don't seem to have any 'Thanks' yet so thanks for all your past contributions. :)
