Generally yesterday everything to do with emails and servers was just a bit rubbish. Last time we had problems like this was when fasthosts had the hacker last month.

See dave, maybe you can help me with another IT problem i have - cheeky, i know.
Since Firefox updated a fortnight ago my browser just keeps shutting down on various sites. It's fine on my site, but sites like Online Banking, Ebay and other biggies, it just shuts down. DO you know why this would be. I put it down to the update, but seeing as how there has been no subsequent patch i am begining to think it must be something in my settings?

Hi Boxby - this comment caught my eye. I'm using Firefox on Ubuntu at the moment and have noticed the browsing shutting down for no apparent reason. Its happened 3 times in as many minutes. I don't have an answer yet, but I'm on the look out and if I find anything, I'll be sure to reply. Regards, Martin (ps. No problems here viewing your site.)

Don't you just hate it when things go wrong with hosting. We always seem to be piggy in the middle. Host says not us. You can't work it out yourself. The buck stops nowhere.
Getting a cheap webhost for your business is a very false economy. You are not only at risk of your host having crap support but also all the other websites on your server too. All it takes is one clown to run a dodgy script and your server goes down.
Good luck getting fixed up.

Sad to see i'm not the only one with fasthosts problems, i'm not really big enough yet for our own hosting, so it's pot luck really with the hosting.
I was trying to avoid reinstalling firefox as i couldn't figure out how to save the bookmarks, but i see that problem is now solved for me as my PC has crashed out altogether.!!!!!
Don't you just love technology!! Heyho, I suppose that's what you get on a Monday Morning when you tried to take the weekend off.

I have a dedicated server with Fasthosts and am not aware of any problems.
Someone mentioned problems with asp - security is one thing - I periodically review my code to look for holes, but as far as performance is concerned, I have had to invest a fair amount of effort into configuring IIS so that code which ran fine on earlier Windows servers will run at all on Windows 2003. I think Win2003 is optimised for .Net and MS would really rather that people like me who hand code in asp would just go away as they don't make a bean out of us.
FWIW, if you are having problems with a web host, my experience over more than a decade is that you will find it only gets worse. So if you have problems, the sooner you move on the better.
Where a lot of people go wrong is that they treat web hosting as a commodity - i.e. buy solely on price and features.
I think it is much better to treat it as a service - what makes for good hosting is how (and how quickly) things get fixed when they go wrong and the quality of help, support and advice.

It really depends if it is 4 days downtime, with no service. Hardly 99.9% uptime!
I agree, a good service provider is one that can provide you with excellent customer support, and ensure that the service or a replacement service is in place within a day at most, and if not provide you with a refund in a timely manner.

I must admit I find it baffling when I come across people who spend thousands of pounds on building a site which is critical to their business but want to spend pennies on hosting. The difference between very, very good hosting and cheap shite is very often less than the cost of one day's lost business.

It depends on your business requirements... we have x number of managed servers in colo sites for pay yearly customers. We tip the balance with rented servers for customers that only want a shared solution. They buy 8 slot to 32 slot game servers. We run gaming servers such as counterstrike, battlefield etc in addition to our Flash Games. So instead of buying a server in and letting it sit there costing up around £70 a month + the server expense (from £800-3000) we rent a server until our customer base increases to justify buying another server for shared gaming.

How do you assess what is good reliable web hosting? Fasthosts have "99.99%" stats for reliability etc, and they a big team of people to fix things when it all goes wrong. But it still does all go wrong. Every host out there will tell you that they are the most reliable and the best host, so who do you believe? You can take recommendations, but even as this thread shows, there are loads of people here completely happy with fasthosts and experiencing no problems.
I was told i would be better off being on a larger hosts server, closer to the main backbone than having my own server. Is this still the case or has broadband made all of this redundant.
i also think, that although critical to me and my business, my site is pretty small and insignificant in the web hosting scale of things.

We don't, not even on our fully managed dedicated servers.
IMO SLA's are worthless and not worth the paper they are printed on.

The best thing to do is do your research, and we've now learned from this. The last three dedicated server hosting providers we have used have been bad.
I guess its the luck of the draw sometimes. Even the best in the world can have problems, the key thing is to ensure that you have a contingency plan in place to ensure that when things go wrong, your customers do not suffer, if your customers suffer, your business as a hosting provider suffers...
People like Carl go the extra mile to ensure people are satisfied with a service... this is the quality I like in a service. It's the constant passing of the buck that I hate... and management that hide behind emails without any telephone contact.

I wonder if Fasthosts provide public statistics from a monitoring service to show their 99.9% uptime?
I don't really agree with your statement regarding using a larger host, as we are a small host compared to the likes of Fasthosts it allows us to get to know our customers and provide direct support. We host quite a few 'big names' including sites for the BBC, Schools/Colleges and a very popular MP3 supplier.

In the end, I think that word of mouth is the best way to go. Your requirements should be easy for almost any host to fulfil and it shouldn't cost you more than a few pounds a month, the main thing is that you want to know that if something does go wrong, someone else will lose sleep over it not just you.
There are several hosts posting here, if you can find one you think will suit, why not give them a try. I would suggest that you discuss in detail what they do, how they work. If you go with a one man band make them reassure you that either a) they never sleep or go on holiday or b) they have a sound fall back plan.
If you can find someone you trust, pay them whatever they ask for. If your trust is well placed, then they will price you a good deal. If you don't trust them, look for someone else.
