Having worked totally find I went into my wordpress site today to be advised it has a critical error. I don't own the website but I can update it.

There's a X beside : The required module gd, is not installed, or has been disabled.

Regretfully I don't even know what that means and a quick scan of the internet/youtube turned up nothing. Can anyone please advise whey that's suddenly and issue or what needs to be done about it. I don't think it can be something I did as I haven't been into the website in an age and it was working when I left it. I put a message out to the website builder but she's not been in contact for ages and hasn't responded. Of course we can stop paying her for the use of the website but it doesn't help us much right now :-(

Any advice kindly given would be much appreciated such as - what does it mean, what does it want :)

Regards,
Trish

    that’s a bit of a problem.

wordpress is written in php it’s a programming language.

gd is a module of php that covers image manipulation

you are getting that error because wordpress requires gd for something it is doing and it is not available in php

This could have happened if for example the php version was upgraded or changed and gd is not compiled in the version of php it is now using which would be the most common reason.

Ways out of it if they continue to be unresponsive:

Do you have access to the wordpress admin?
Do you have access to your domain registration for example it might be at 123 reg or go daddy etc?

Are you seeing the gd error on the critical error page?

If you are seeing it in the wordpress admin that might also be a red herring.

Ah, thank you. Just knowing what it means makes it clearer in my mind, I appreciate you taking the time to explain it. I'm afraid all I have is access to make amends on the site, I don't even know who she has the domain registered with. I'll just have to keep sending messages and hope that she replies at some point.

    No worries at all.

Once you do please make sure you get control of your own domain name.

Also install the wordpress plugin all in one wp backup and take a backup of your website and download it.

Both things are crucial if it is hard to get hold of them in the future.

Are you sure the developer of the site is the host? It may be she just has a login to the account. If that is the case you should be able to claim the site.

Oh, I didn't know that. She was the developer and I've looked through emails and it seems it has recently been taken over by 123-reg. Perhaps I can contact them and solve both issues. I'll give her two weeks to respond (already given 2 weeks) but just in case she's on a long holiday and come back to a load of emails. After that I'll call 123-reg and see what can be done for both issues.

Hi Chaps, I contacted 123.Reg and they advised the domain was held in the creators name and pointing toward MyUKCloud.com, so she needs to call them. Additionally, there's a message on the site advising:

"Your Elegant Themes subscription has expired. You must renew your account to regain access to product updates and support. To ensure compatibility and security, it is important to always keep your themes and plugins updated."

Could this be the problem? That without this subscription renewed the images etc. cannot work, or do you think it's another problem?

I'm emailing the producer of the site again in the hope that she comes back to me with all the information you've given me so far, which shall hopefully spark her into some sort of help.

Thank you again for any help you can offer.

    Hi

A subscription expiring would not normally cause this issue.

For your domain if it is a .co.uk .uk .me.uk .org.uk domain type you can also check with Nominet (the domain Registry for those types) because it may have been registered in your name and you can gain access that way as 123reg may be referring to the account the domain is in on their systems not the registrant details of the domain itself.

Phone: +44 (0)330 236 9475 for Nominet they are very helpful just explain your predicament and that you are trying to regain control of your domain, if it's in your name you should be able to get back control and can then transfer it to another registrar in an account in your name.

You can then either keep trying to contact this person or speak to a web host about new hosting and they should help you take a backup and get everything pointed to the new hosting and help you with your wordpress error.

If you have email at the domain that can all be worked out by a new web host also.

Best scenario obviously is you get control of your domain (crucial in any event) and transfer it to another registrar (host) and this person responds and fixes your issues!

But worst case now you know what you can do!

As @ukwebhosting has suggested getting control of the site is crucial.

The simplest solution is to migrate the site to a new host. That way all ties to the old developer are cut. Unless of course the domain name is registered in their name but that's a different problem.

The elegant themes subscription probably just means you aren't getting the full set of features and support. But it's quite possible you never needed them in the first place.

Thank you for all the info, I'll give her a couple of days and then do the above. I must say though, I am thinking that this site is troublesome, if it's not one problem it's another with this site. She created it using a package called Divi and the headers on some of the pages sometimes disappear when you first load it (from the internet not the site), she's installed a plugin called stop jumping headers, the available layouts aren't very 'now' and though we've done our best with the design it's not great. The current one is 'sort of' working, we just can't update anything, so whilst we have that I'm thinking it's time to create a new site, perhaps still Wordpress but using Elementor (because I've used it before and I feel it gives better and more dynamic layouts). I did ask the designer if I could move this from Divi to Elementor but apparently they're different animals. So you do webhosting, do you have any ideas and can you give me some prices to take to the MD? But I understand if you're not allowed to do that on here, perhaps you could message me?

Sorry, I should say that generally I don't mind waiting for help/advice on the website, but we've known this lady to take four and half weeks to respond and in some cases never respond at all.

Perfect. I'll email over in the morning once I'm back in the office.

Do you see the error message when visiting the live site as a general visitor, or only when you login to the Wordpress Admin?

Sorry for repeating this, every time I go to reply an advert pops up and I loose the link. It's only when visiting the site as an admin, although, the issue is that one of the images is missing. When you go in as an admin and try to remove/update it you can't then save the site.

@Onthebrightside - hopefully @ukwebhosting will get it all sorted as the developer was out of her depth. Sounds like the whole site needs a bit of an upgrade.

Installing plugins to fix a Divi Bug! Bonkers.

I think you're totally right, I've since learned that website creation isn't really something she does full time, more of a side line, which explains why she's never been able to solve any of the issues. But for all of that it's served us well over the last 5 years :), but it's time for an entire upgrade I think. To leave that site running while it's still able to run and for us to upgrade and sort out a better website before we let it go.
