Search Engines and Google

Hi all,

What happens if you take down a website and it is listed with a lot of search engines and Google? How long will the content that was listed with the search engines appear in google searches?

Many thanks,

D

You have more than google to worry about, even if google removes the data, it could still on sites like the internet archive's waybackmachine, and many other search engines. There could be copies of it all over the place that could stay in the search results.

Wayback machine pages won't appear in actual Google search results - the only value they have is being able to browse your old content via archive.org.

It used to be the case that Google would keep pages indexed for 12 months before removing them completely (if your site was always down during this time).

More recently I've seen cases of different things happening:
  • Old pages staying indexed for a long time even if the site has been removed.
  • Pages being removed within a week (I had a site hacked while I was on holiday and came back to find all the pages deindexed by Google).
If you specifically want to remove pages from Google you can use the URL removal tool in the sitemap control panel: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

Hi,

content last for a very long time and appear in SERPS. you must have seen some times google bring the old content even if you have remove the content from the page. that means google keep the previous information in it's index.

once you change the content of a particular page, the spider will catch the page within 7-10 days if crawler is crawling the particular page regularly, but the old page will appear in some searches even if you have removed it
