Fyre on Netflix

Just watched the Fyre Festival documentary on Netflix. Looks like the whole thing happened off the back of a single Instagram post by two influencers. Has anyone else ever seen something like that happen before?

Have a look at the Sunny Co Clothing story, positves and negatives to be learned from their experience. Much more of a true viral post. With Fyre it was more than just a couple, reportedly $250k to Kendall Jenner for her post, plus 10 of the worlds top models etc, plus 100's of smaller influencers. Whilst the marketing/production was undoubtedly very slick, I think if any business spent that much they would make some serious noise.

The Fyre Festival documentary is so interesting - it demonstrates the social power that influencers hold, but also raises the question of how beneficial is that power?

There were a lot of mistakes with the planning of Fyre from the start, including that many of the influencers never had any intention of attending the Festival - yet they were happy to mislead their followers to believe they would be there.

For me, the lesson for businesses is to approach influencer marketing with a level head. Seek out/work with influencers who not only align with your brand/message, but find people who genuinely believe in what your company does and are sharing honest/genuine posts with their fans. Fyre is the perfect example of how influencer marketing can go wrong (amid many other errors!).
