I am going to put a gold number up for sale but am wondering if there is any risk of the number being stolen if I put the full number in the listing? The number is on a sim card that has never been registered.

What's a gold number?

I know there used to be a good trade in numbers with 0000 or some other combination but a study a while back showed people didn't care anymore. They just click on the number from google or a website and make the call.

I got the sim card this week with a PAYG phone I bought so certainly still active on my side, the number is below and looking at sold Ebay numbers it seems to be worth in the £100's, better than a kick in the teeth for a free sim card. :)

All I have to do is making 10 phone calls asking to speak to Carl ;-)

The thing is people do buy them and there is a market for them. Me personally I would never buy one but people do.

Check ebay sold listings.

0744 9877777 £295
077 700*7000 £355
07776668666 £695
07469 677777 £155
077733*3333 £355

Check the other sold listings on Ebay, loads of numbers a lot not as good as mine go for hundreds some even over a thousand.

As I said I have been offered £100 from a local scrap metal merchants but I feel I could get at least twice that on Ebay, maybe quite a bit more but I just need to know if I am safe listing the whole number?

It's your sim - nobody else can use the number so yes, you will be safe.

Why do numpties even think these number make a difference? They are more likely to lose business than they are to get more leads.

I don't like to disagree with you fisicx as I usually agree with what you say, but your wrong. Mobile phone numbers that are "stagnant" have a shelf live and then are reissued.

I had a "gold" number back in the late 80's on a car phone (you know the type, slick phone on your dashboard but a suitcase in the boot for the battery and communication equipment). Can't for the life of me remember what it was, and back them no one dared phone me because of the stupid costs involved.

Today phone numbers are pretty much worthless, and as had been mentioned you store phone numbers by contact name. Who actually knows the phone number of their sibling or parent, let alone a "gold" number off a advertising medium.

I agree 100% as to me numbers are worthless as you just put them in your phone, store them in the cloud for when you change phones then re-install. Even today I sold something to a game shop and they asked for my number. I had no idea what it was so had to look it up. Even my family and mates number I have no idea. The only number I know is my parents home number as they have had the same one for decades.

But clearly some people do still go for them as the market is telling us just that. I suppose if you are a one man band taxi driver then an easy mobile number is good for business. But otherwise, pointless to me.

Anyway, I will give this a go on Ebay, either way it came free so I may as well chance it. I feel it is worth £200+ hence taking the gamble of declining £100 local.

I could be wrong and clouding my own judgement, but worth a try. :)

Interesting way of valuing something. Take a second and get a feeling of something ;)

Gold mobile number are for £30-£40 on ebay (much better than yours, i.e. 944 944.

I would say that your number is worth maybe £10-£15 on eBay.

Can you see a difference between your number and those numbers ???

0777 666 8 666
vs
07809 7777 09

(I have put 8 as an example)

Multiples of the same number often result in misdials. Good numbers have sequences and attract higher prices.

You should have taken the £100.

The first number 0777 666 8 666 sold for £695, can you now see why I value my number more than £100? It is a 3 digit number and easy to remember. I think it is worth £200 ish. A lot better than most number that sell in this region looking over the sold listing records.
