Yes just look at the rubbish that is on TV now for teenagers.......stuff like Made In Chelsea, Jersey Shore etc. All false tits and shagging. Not a patch on the Two Ronnies or Steptoe and Son or Flowery Tw@ts.

Also look at Gangnam Style......not a patch on The Birdie Song.

Things are definitely dumbing down.

Dont forget Big Brother, Geordie Shore, these so called programs should be banned 100% as an affront to common sense and normality, the fact that there really are people that dumb and vacuous disgusts me, and apparently its entertainment?????

probably because children dont go out
probably because of diet
probably because of drugs
probably because of working parents
probably because of non working parents
probably because of red tape at schools
probably because of being told they are to young to do simple things
probably because of cotton wool
or probably none of the above

Seems like its a fact ,so why probably for the fist time in history are children less bright than their parents.?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...igent-than-a-generation-ago-claims-study.html

Maybe because a lot of children are being brought up by children these days, I seem to recall the UK having Europe's largest teen-parent population? Not something to be proud of I think. These parents do not have any life skills to pass on yet and treat children as trophys or status symbols in a lot of cases. Many more children are not being brought up by the parent either, they get dumped on nannies and minders that couldn't care less a lot of the time, this is wrong.

Schools are also failing, I feel we may now be seeing the effect of namby-pambying the education system back in the 80's or 90's too.

I think this is a root cause. Children are if anything getting cleverer as measured by IQ tests, but the education system has failed them, and the generation before them, by not installing the tools and systems of learning.

Ironically it's the stupidity of the Baby Boomers 1960s generation which is at fault, again.
  • They blew all the money on toys and holidays so we have a massive debt.
  • They gave prisoners a slap on the wrist so we massive massive crime.
  • They turned housing into a source of wealth so we have massive house prices.
  • They voted themselves huge, unfunded pensions leaving their grandchildren the massive bill.

And they have the bare faced cheek to accuse the young of being the dumb ones?

It’s a interesting argument but in my opinion its not true. Think of all the advances in technology and medicine. I do not believe for a second that we are dumbing down; however I do believe that society in general is in danger. Our brains are complex things that should be challenged however all most people use them for nowadays is locating the TV remote. The argument that if someone was brought back from the past they would be more intelligent is nonsense - I do believe that we are all born with the same hardware (generally speaking), even dating back through history however we just have a wider and more in-depth understanding of the world and the way in which it works and functions including the rules and laws in which the earth adheres to. I am sure in another few thousand years our current understanding will become archaic as the people of the future will build upon our understanding and develop a new look on the world. Why would our brains dumb down so to speak? Yes the cave man had to find food and shelter but modern life is full of challenges too - we still have to find work in order to earn money in which to buy food and provide shelter for our families as well as going through school, college and university.

As humanity continues into the new millennium, technology and communication continue to play an increasingly important role in human life. Today, most people in developed countries are completely connected through cell phones, tablets and computers. Today's households have an increasing array of electrical devices, from wireless modems to intelligent appliances to smart meters. Where 50 years ago, 1 electrical outlet per room was sufficient, today, homes have at least 1 outlet per wall on every wall of the house. People are always connected, and figuratively, the world is getting smaller each day.

As the Information Age unfolds, so does information about our exposure to artificial electromagnetic fields (EMF) that many believe can be quite harmful to the human body. Even if you don't believe that heavy usage of devices such as cell phones can cause cancer and brain tumors, one must acknowledge the documented proof that electronic devices can disrupt or alter brain function. "The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as 'possibly carcinogenic' to humans that might transform normal cells into cancer cells." (source)

One example of research into the effects of EMF includes a study conducted by Bary W. Wilson et al. With their findings published in the Journal of Pineal Research, Wilson et al. examined the possible effects of 60-Hz electromagnetic-field exposure on pineal gland function in humans. In the study, the researchers measured excretion of urinary 6-hydroxymelatonin sulfate (6-OHMS), a stable urinary metabolite of the pineal hormone melatonin, in 42 individuals who used conventional and continuous polymer wire (CPW) electric blankets for the duration of 8 weeks. The researchers reported:

Volunteers using conventional electric blankets showed no variations in 6-OHMS excretion as either a group or individuals during the study period. Serving as their own controls, 7 of 28 volunteers using the CPW blankets showed statistically significant changes in their mean nighttime 6-OHMS excretion. The CPW blankets switched on and off approximately twice as often when in service and produced magnetic fields that were 50% stronger than those from the conventional electric blankets. On the basis of these findings, we hypothesize that periodic exposure to pulsed DC or extremely low frequency electric or magnetic fields of sufficient intensity and duration can affect pineal gland function in certain individuals. - Wilson et al. (Journal of Pineal Research)

Another study was at the University of Berne in Switzerland on the effects of 16.7 Hz magnetic fields on 6-OHMS excretion. This study was based on comparing 6-OHMS levels of 108 male railway workers between leisure periods and days following the start of service on electrically powered engines or working beneath transmission lines. The findings were similar:

"The results support the hypothesis that 16.7 Hz magnetic fields alter 6-OHMS excretion in humans exposed to magnetic fields."- Pfluger DH et al. (National Center for Biotechnology Information)

Most recently, Malka N. Halgamuge of the University of Melbourne in Australia further examined the effect of man-made EMF on the pineal gland. Halgamuge states in his research that the pineal gland likely recognizes EMF as light, which consequently would result in reduced melatonin production.

"…the results show the significance of disruption of melatonin due to exposure to weak EMFs, which may possibly lead to long-term health effects in humans." - Malka N. Halgamuge (Oxford Journals)

The pineal gland is a small part of the body's endocrine system and is located between the brain's two hemispheres. This particular gland secretes melatonin, which is believed to contribute to our effects of well-being and happiness and regulates our sleep/wake cycle. Melatonin is also believed to fight free radicals that can damage neurons.

It is documented that the pineal gland is sensitive to all types of magnetic fields, including geomagnetic fields of the Sun's solar storms, and also extremely sensitive to tissue calcification, especially when exposed to Fluoride, which is also magnetically attracted to the pineal gland, causing a number of mental disorders.

The brighter people in the population have less kids. The less bright people have more kids.

It's bound to dilute the IQ of the population as a whole.

No no no. Regression to the mean old chap. Over time we all revert to the same average of stupidity, altho' the average has changed because of better diet and other factors.

I must admit to having an inkling of agreement with Link Ninja Earl. I wonder, I wonder if his theory about stupidity being caused by 'i'-anything could be linked to a certain religion?

Has an I innit!! The lightbulb does not burn as bright as its developed to save power. Similarly with education, why exhaust the cells to mathematically calucalte when there is an adding machine. Spell checkers so grammar isn't a necessary function. Life is one big button push and as we move through the centuries the effort to push the button will not be required just the thought. Brains will be a 1 cell in a jar all chanting ";push the button, push the button". Good Luck..Que Vadis...Frank

the way of measuring dumbness is dumb and out dated which can only lead to false measurements

are we really getting dumber?
i doubt it

yes things are different .some skills being lost that are not need at this time but new skills being learnt that replace.

evolution

Well I'm sure we now have a massive employee skills base in being a Barista or Burger flipper.

Sadly this has replaced knowledge in heavy engineering and production methods:(

not really lost but put away until times of need.
the fact we are not using them does not mean we are dumber. if we really needed to learn those skills we could .

i dont see why not doing something means becoming dumber.
surely its the ability to learn if needed that matters.

Its the inate intelligence that allows one to learn that has suffered through evolution, allied to a heavy reliance on technology.IMHO

being told constantly that your not allowed to do something for reasons such as health and safety or other, or you need this license for this and that or just pampering nannying.

last year when in my previous job at break time me and the lads were chin wagging and the convo of this kind came up. now every single one of them, 10 in total were amazed that i let my 7 year old daughter make her own toast in the morning.
why?
because she might kill herself.

is it really hard for a 7 year old to put bread into a toaster and push the lever down?
oh but it might get stuck when popping up
theres a little switch on the wall and when switched pull the plug out or come and get me and ill do it. is this beyond a 7year old really?
no
we are not becoming dumber . we are being told we are. do not listen

Never doubted it for a minute.

I balame the Ipad,Ipod or anything with an "I" in it.:)

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/s...and-emotional-decline-ever-since-8307101.html

I don't believe it, I think the iPad, iPod and everything else goes to show how far we have came.

If you look at all the inventions over the years, there is a massive gap between inventions hundreds of years ago nowadays if we can't do something, finding a solution usually takes weeks/months before it was decades.

i.e the leap from cave men to current standard humans took millions of years yet the move from horse and carriage to airplane took a few hundred if that.

Another example is medical - 150-200 years ago no anesthetic or real knowledge now the survival rate of surgery is millions of times better.

Here is a list of inventions (so called ) since 2000.

How many have you in your home.:)
