Web desinger Cost

I have recently taken over a retail business and it has a web site, i met the company last week and not sure if i am being taken for a ride, there are a few areas on the website that i can edit but for any other areas they want to charge me 65 pound an hour. Therefore we want to keep the adjustment to the web page as small as possible and then use a facebook page to be a bit more dynmaic. Therefore we asked for a quote to set up a facebook page and they wanted over 900 pounds. So i just set one up myself, not sure what that 900 pounds was for, as we want a link from our website to our facebook page. We asked for a couple of changes, at the moment you can free hand the date therefore would like a calender also on the order page in admin would like to view the message/comment rather than having a link to the message/comment. I was quoted this would take 2 hours...130 pounds. Not sure if this is reasonable.

No one can tell you if it's reasonable without seeing the website, and seeing the coding of the site.

The best bet is to go sit down with another designer and ask their opinion on the changes and their cost, as the edits will depend on so many variables.

It really depends on the people doing the work. You can certainly get things done a lot cheaper than that. A facebook page for example takes about an hour to set up. It's that easy you could do it yourself.

do you have to use these people? If it's a standard website then any halfway decent webby type person will be able to make the changes.

In fact there's loads of bods here on the forum will do it for next to nothing in exchange for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

The company built the website, so for now i have to use them, but don't think i have to say with them if i can get better value for money. I have a meeting with them tomorrow and going to see how they justify 900 pounds to set up a facebook page.

Why do you have to use them. It's your website, so you can do as you please.

Although this is slightly harsh without more information, but initial reaction is that this company are being a touch greedy.

And you are not obliged to use them. However, I would have a chat with them at their offices, and get a feel for them - they might win back your confidence.

Unreasonable - maybe - but as Faevilangel has said without looking its not possible to tell you much.

£65 an hour is normal for most Website designers. I dont see much wrong with that, but the price for linking to Facebook isn't unreasonable if it needs to be hardcoded in.

Do you know if they built your website using a Content Management System (CMS) and if so is this something your contract with your web designer allows you to take over the ongoing content management of the site? If it is in a content management system and your contract allows you to take this on, are you prepared to take over the running of the website if it means you having to spend more time doing this yourself instead of working on your core retail business?

A good way I like to to look at it is this, is your own time spent working on your core retail business going to be worth much more or less than the £65 a hour you are paying your web designer to make it worh while swapping your time away from your retail sales to do the web side of things yourself? Also remember that something a web designer says they will charge you a couple of hours for might take you considerably longer to do yourself because it will be a new world for you, the facebook thing may have been quick for you to do, but not everything will work out that way. You may also not end up achieving the finshed look you were hoping for either.
