Need a domain name...

I need a new name for my online, local directory....the site also includes some local content and a few other bits and bobs.but I need a snappy name :D and for the life of me I can't come up with anything that seems to work........

Does anyone have any ideas please - or point me in the direction of some inspiration?

Thanks!

Don't know where you live, but something wholly generic like;

YourBirmingham, or
MyBirmingham, or
BirminghamDirectory, or
BirminghamNews, or
ILoveBirmingham, or
WeLoveBirmingham, or
WhatsOnBirmingham, or quite simply
thebirminghambusinessdirectory (But anything with 'town name' and 'business directory' is a bit long IMO)

Don't use local in your domain name. It's overused and cliched. If you straddle two towns why not get townXandtownY.co.uk or put hyphens in to make it easier to read. Don't use the word 'directory' either as this may well hamper future expansions.

Or just buy a made up name. People will refer to your site the way they do about google, amazon or even Facebook. Is veespy free?

Thats what I want ideally - as Im thinking something snappy for a phone app later down the line hopefully!

In terms of logo I have stumbled across a hound with a magnifing glass....I was wondering if I can incorporate this somehow (Im thinking hounds/searching etc?)...that way, I can hopefully produce window stickers..again down the line....for those local businesses to use - similar to estate agents with "Find us on Rightmove" etc... or is that a bit cheesey?

A suggestion on domain name search - you usually have loads of ideas and most of the domains are already taken. It's quite a tiring process and at some point you will consider two- or three-word domains. I always create a list of words that are potentially good and would work together well, i.e. adjectives and nouns so if I was in the fruit-and-veg business this would go like:
fresh, green, red, yellow, john's etc.
vegetables, fruits etc.

Then create a list of all combinations from both lists, i.e.:
freshvegetables
freshfruits
greenvegetables
greenfruits
etc.

Then check domain availability in bulk:
http://www.domaintools.com/buy/availability-check/bulk/ (.com etc.)
http://www.uk-cheapest.co.uk/domain-search-bulk.php (.co.uk)

You will find that many of the combinations are already taken, some of those that are available are not that great anyway and 2 or 3 "would be ok".
Repeating this process a few time usually gives you a decent list of finalists.

This obviously will not work for abstract words but the problem is that any sensible words of up to 6 characters are taken and longer ones may be difficult to remember.

yes...would that mean 2 lots of advertising though..? I guess it could go expand into different areas easily though........

Only if you don't link the domains ;)

I.E. one could have one set of "advertisements" the other could have another set, if it's two towns close by, you could have a link2 button, with something perhaps like

Didn't find what you were looking for?
Did you find...?
Try...[insert town here]

etc etc

the options are pretty endless :)

Houndog.com

Hounddog.com

If you've found an image of something you like as a logo, why not use it as a company/domain name?

Or you could always come up with perhaps an extinct creature such as the dodo, or a Glyptodon, or Hypohippos.com ... something different? :)

sorry to bump...but any thoughts good or bad?

Ok, well thinking up domain names is an artform and something I normally charge for but seen as you asked so nice here is the solution to your problem;

hereblinks as in "Here Be Links" you could put the e in but that your choice. It's available in all forms.

Your only problem now is everyone on here execpt me will be trying to register it first. :D

I personally think it is horrible. I would never use a guide that stoops to text speak. Young people probably would. It implies you can't spell.

how about something more useful?

a slogan of we are just round the corner from you.

how about
find me now?
in my town

hereblinks is good.

Is it me or do I sense a little contradiction going on here?

My twopenneth Op, hereblinks, with or without the e is bloody awful! UrGuide, however, is good and all encompassing. The only problem with it though, is it isn't specific to a town/place as I thought you had wanted.

Thanks Mike. I did like URGuide or URGuide2 as I thought I could characterise the U with the U being a smile, and add eyes arms and legs - that would also work with a symbol for a phone app further down the line..

I wish think the local advertising would take care of the specifics, but it would allow me to expand later on (fingers crossed) to different areas, with perhaps the home page having different location options as well as buying local domains such as "urguide2birmingham", for example..?

I like the idea but there are a couple of problems:

    a) urguide on it's own doesn't really mean anything - ie. your guide to what? (it could however be the master/umbrella domain to a series of urguide2***)

    b) urguide2townname is good ...but ...and it's a BIG but.... you'd need to capture all/most of the names you want now. If you didn't and your first steps proved ok, you'll find others will quickly snap them up, either to ride piggyback on your success or to hold you to ransom over the name.

    In summary, your options are:

    a) think of another name, or
    b) go for it and allocate more of your budget to domain names at the outset, grabbing at least the main conurbations.

Ok so herebelinks isn't so great and it is a contradiction. It does suffer the same problem, but not so severely.

    I have another suggestion.

    keep it local.
    Looking for us.
    closestbusiness.

And the advertising slogan is: Why travel when we are right here in your own town.

I stand by my comments for URguide. They are just one person's opinion though. I've never influenced anyone yet LOL. !

If you are looking for names, you have to consider everyone who will use your directory not just the fashionable young. Yourguideto is better. Although I would expect it to be a tourists what's on guide to the town, unless it said something like, yourguidetolocalbusinesses.

The other consideration is foreign business people who might visit the town and want the services in your directory. They would never understand urguide2.

(or herebelinks for that matter actually.)

You are going to depend on people using your directory, so it is important to take non native people, low intelligence. high intelligence and everyone in between in consideration.

It is just my personal opinion.

    Regards
    Cheryl
