Hiya

Aside from content, how would you normally optimise a wordpress site if you can't access the code eg meta tags and the basic stuff, would it be more advisable to access it via ftp and edit from there?

thanks

Install the All in one SEO plugin (or others) and edit the page titles/metas from there. All other SEO tasks are the same as any other site.

There are loads of SEO tools for Wordpress, I would recomend OWG's we use that one and it works fine, you can edit pretty much everything on-site.

I recommend the all in one seo plugin. Its also a good idea to make your url's seo friendly, this would mean going into Wordpress admin->settings->permalinks and then select the custom structure and add this /%category%/%postname%

Check YouTube as there are lots of videos to walk you through settings and how to use the plugins. I've used Yoast and All in One and, they are both great. Yoast has more features and may be a bit overwhelming at first but All In One is still a very good option.

+1 for the Yoast SEO for Wordpress plugin, wouldn't touch any of the others. Latest update includes new Social features, I expect this will be an area which increasingly gets developed. The developer Joost also features tons of helpful articles on yoast.com

Make sure you nofollow parts of your site you don't want indexed. By default WP set nofollow on links within pages but depending on how you do your navigation and what content you use on your site keeping a clean selection of index-able pages help a great deal I've found.

I'm not so sure how much of a benefit %category%postname% I sometimes prefer just %postname% as often some posts can have long titles.

If you are also using category and title in the description field, title field. You have to be carefull if you really want good meta that will be friendly in google.
