Tablet PC Or IPAD?

Both are so hot now, your ideas about them?
you know one is no-brand, the other one is a little expensive,
so, which you will choose?

Someone must have made it so there is a brand - it's just not very well known. Unless of course it's a cheap copy.

I'll buy the tablet that works, is well supported, for which there are all the apps I need and has a battery life to last the day.

Price isn't that important.

Disadvantages of iPad are lack of USB, flash and Microsoft Office (you can read but not create or edit documents). And cost of course. Staggeringly useful device despite that tho'.

I refuse to pay the extra money for the Apple brand even though it's a nice bit of kit. I'm not interested in playing games or downloading pointless apps. There are a few quite nice apps though

As soon as I find one that uses excel and powerpoint, or even open office that I can save and transfer (not in "the cloud") I'll be in and I can get rid of my desktop and laptop. Samsung? HP? Blackberry? Very confusing at the moment.

    Yeah;

I'm suprised that OEMs and Microsoft haven't took advantage or pushed Windows 7 Embedded Tablet PCs more. That will have the potential to do all of what a PC can and have the expansion and storage options you need. The Win 7 Tablet PCs I've looked at are either too bulky, too expensive, laggy touchscreens, bad battery. Suprising because even a striped down version of Windows 7 can run many of desktop apps and doesn't need a hungry processor at all.

You can get apps that do spreadsheets and documents.

Apps are free or cheap. Most useful apps are under £4.99. Can you imagine PC software being so cheap?

An Ipad is incredibly easy to work. I have never managed to crash it, and am constantly amazed by the battery life.

It is not really there for bulk data entry, but anything less is ok.

I don't want a crappy App, I want a fully integrated Office package so that I can use the same programmes and documents as on my iMac. And I'm happy to pay properly for it. (And I don't want the cloud based stuff either)

    So there :)

I'm with cjd on this one.

Compare the Photoshop app for the iPad, it lets you sort between files and change tools on Photoshop you have on your proper computer. Sounds really quite useful!

But then… Look at the tablet PC and its actually able to run full blown Photoshop and you can use the touchscreen for drawing on! Makes the iPad look like a kids toy in comparison.

I was disappointed with the iPad when it was announced, they missed a trick having it run iOS rather than OSX

You are missing the Android tablets. For instance, there is the Samsung Galaxy Tabs - come in 7" (paperback book size), 8.9" and 10.1" (iPad) sizes.

I have the Galaxy Tab 7" (1/3 the weight of an iPad so perfect for using one-handed), and its perfect for things when I dont want to boot up my laptop, or I am on the move, or relaxing in the bath.

Things I use my TAB for...

    1) Reading - ebooks, RSS feeds, on-line magazines and such
    2) Browsing the web - perfect for this as it supports flash (ipad doesnt) so I can use it for online banking, project management, etc etc
    3) Email sending and viewing
    4) Social Media - Tweetdeck keeps me up to speed on twitter, facebook and such
    5) Watching movies - very nice for holding and playing movies - 64gig memory holds dozens of movies - great for train and plane trips
    6) Managing my time - I have a time recorder app, my ToDo list app, project management software etc
    7) Reading the News - apps like BuxxBox on android allow you to create a newspaper from all kinds of different sources (tech news, BBC, SKY news, RSS feeds etc)
    8) lots, lots more

PS - browsed and replied to this on my Galaxy Tab.

I had a Acer 1825 PT and really liked it.
It had a decent battery life with a reasonable processor and 4gb of memory. It was a little bigger than an ipad with a 11.2" screen and weighed about 1kg more.

I'm happy with the weight - it did all the tablety things I needed as well as being a PC just as quick as my aging desktop. I would really like a i7 X220 tablet laptop, but unfortunately can't justify the expenditure right now.

Have had a play with an ipad, but still don't see any real 'point' for me - much prefer a real PC with a real keyboard and real configuration options :).

Oh and as for free apps - you get a hell of a lot more 'full featured' applications free on bigger systems - open office, for example.

Thank you wil, yes, you are right, and as i see, the operating system of many tablet pc is Android 2.1, or Android 2.2 on the market, so the price is not so high.

Thanks for your idea, but also there are many different size of tablet pc, such as 7 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch, not too big to use as i see
While you're fairly obviously just a spammer...
Go on, give us some example of tablet PCs, no, not Android tablet, but model numbers of actual tablet computers, with full keyboard that can run Windows, etc.

ps_leccy.... there are indeed tablet PC's - but have to say, the ones that I have played with are not much good...

A list of 10 with quick reviews are here....

    http://mobileoffice.about.com/od/tabletpcs/tp/tabletpctp.htm

As I say, I have played with a couple, and they feel.... heavy, cumbersome and slooooow

There are indeed tablet PCs, I'm not denying that. The one I had was a reasonable weight, not cumbersome and was faster than my desktop.
Your link contains a couple of 10" ones (netbook based ones, I would presume as there's quite a lot out there), but no 7" or 8" ones which you previously mentioned and thus I was questioning.

tablets, PC's, smartphones, etc are business tools to make it easier to go about running your business. So you do need to work out what problem you are trying to solve?

When you know that it is easier to make an informed decision.

I have all 3 and use them at different parts of the day.

I see that HP are discontinuing their touchpad and are having a fire sale in the US and Canada reducing the 16GB version to $99.00 and the 32GB version for $149.00. Don't know if this will come to the UK but it might be worth looking out for it! It runs WebOS and does look pretty good and if they reduce it to £99.00 over hear might be a worthwhile buy!

You're not paying extra money for the apple brand atall, the other tablets are very similar price but not as good.

Tablets still haven't caught up with the iPad, they're buggy and un-responsive.

And 'Pages' is essentially Microsoft word, and 'Numbers' is essentially Microsoft Excel.

On the Kindle, this adequately explains why I got mine:

But generally have more and more useful features for less money (even if you get a lower spec for that money, I haven't checked the details.)

The app store has 500,000+ apps all specially designed for mobile/tablet, have you tried running applications on tablet PC's? It's not pretty.
Oops, my first reply got the wrong end of the stick because you mention tablet PCs.
My original comment was about just 'tablets' - ie probably Android ones.
The android market place is obviously expanding decently.
Flash is one of the obvious things you get on top of the ipad.

What I first wrote in relation to Tablet PCs (Tablet laptops):
Yes, my tablet PC had a processor just slower than my desktop, but thanks to 4gb of RAM over the desktop's 2gb and being a few years newer, would benchmark a little quicker.

From what I've seen of the 500k 'apps' or whatever, most are 'apps' - silly games, little single purpose tools etc.
As I was putting cost forward too - programs like GIMP, Open Office and the like are all very powerful and available free. Nothing close for the boutique devices.

    yes, i may agree with you, if for business or work, you may need an IPAD;
if for entertainment, small games, music, video, chat, etc., it's a good choice for tablet pc, i believe so.:)

Odd, that's not what I'm saying and in reality there is only a small niche of business uses for an ipad too my mind - a tablet laptop would be a better bet in many situations, or a cheaper device.

(But I'm presuming your just posting in an attempt to spam.)

Lenovo (ex IBM) of Thinkpad fame have announced a touch screen Thinkpad.

This one has USB and HDMI ports - which I'd find jolly useful - as well as Flash of course.....
