What to Do with 500k

Hi

I am about to receive a large sum of money roughly 500k and I want to use it to make as much money as possible.

So I just wanted some ideas on how I could turn 500k into as much as I can.

What would you do with that sum of money?

Don't open a restaurant:)

In seriousness, the answer to that depends on a lot of things, such as what risk/reward profile you are looking at, whether you want to be hands on or hands off and, of course, what your knowledge and skill sets are.

Back to my opening comment - do not EVER stick your money into a new business venture just because you have it (we call it lottery restaurant syndrome - and the failure rate is spectacular!)

Set yourself up as a loan company and use £50k of it to provide low cost doorstep loans.

£500k is not a lot of money, it is enough to allow you to be comfortable, but I would say that you should look only at the money you can afford to lose without it having an affect on your life. If I had £500k gifted to me I wouldn't risk more than 20% of it.

Hmm. Assuming I really didn't need the money for anything else, I'd find 10 different promising startups who each need 50k or so to really make a go of things (nice tax benefits for you there, for starters) and become a shareholder / director of each, giving each one a few hours of my time each week for overall advice and step-by-step guidance.

Assuming only half survive the first few years (pretty average), you only need 3-5 decent ones to make it and you'll be laughing all the way to Santander (because at this rate there won't be any other banks around in a few years!).

And there's always the chance - if you choose carefully - that one of them may prove to be a little gold mine.

Give 20K to your local drug dealer and tell him to make as much as he can and then give him a % of his makings  JOKE!

500K I would place 250K into a high rates savings account and bring the interest in.

the other 250K I would start a company that has low start-up costs and work at it and make some money.

Maybe book a holiday.

Well, lets see. You are asking how to use 500k on a business forum.
Rather than from professional advisers, people like your accountant or lawyer, or people they have recommended. Complete anonymous strangers rather than experts you know or have been told about.

With this level of trust, and in order to lead a better life I suggest you give it all to Mother Theresa's Poor Dawg Knees Up Fund (Antigua) Ltd. I'll PM Paypal details if you want, but cash is better.

Hi

Its is difficult isnt it. There are so many different ideas about, some crazy ones I must admit. But nobody is singing off the same him sheet.

It appears everyone would do somthing different as apposed to doing something obvious to make money.

Banks are no good as the top rate of interest is 2% if you are lucky. Businesses are no good as nobody is spending any money. Houses are ok but you need alot of money to buy just one and the return is very minimal and would take years to make anything.

So really there is nothing for me to do but put it in the bank and keep my full time job and be comfortable.

Only if you are thinking of BTL, there is still plenty of money to be made in property if you have the time (don't know if you do) and the money (which it sounds like you soon will).

Why are you sitting bashing the keyboard asking what to do with it?

Don't buy property in expensive areas - simple!

For someone who is coming into a large pot of money - you are incredibly negative:D

I can think of stacks of things to do, but then that's just me.;)

You just have no idea where the money is flowing do you? And I doubt that that you have any money coming to you.

If the best that you can do is to keep your money in the bank then your financial advisor needs sacking and you need to get a brain.

Grow up and get a life, there is serious money out there if you have the right product/service....

Keep most of it if you need it long term. I think looking for ideas from other on how to make money from a windfall is dangerous. Ideas of that magnitude should be your own.

Personally I would no doubt invest £100,000 of it in shares in a company called Rockhopper Exploration...but that's from doing my own research...

Property with leverage is a risky business too - especially nowadays. In the event of any major worldwide recession - only those people will survive who have property fully owned and cash in the bank to get them through. So I would suggest this - with 300k - buy as many fully owned properties you can without a mortgage and rent them out. Look into a small commercial property too and buy in an area which is established but buy something that needs a bit of work on it. With the remaining 200k - form a limited liability company and buy more properties under the company - but with a leverage this time, so you basically own 1 or 2 mortgage free properties and a bunch more leveraged properties. Do not leverage the entire 500k or else you can fail miserably as a lot of buy-to-let investors are failing these days. Keep a few grand in savings too liquid just for backup capital.

Anyone putting these type of threads on a business forum who genuinely has a large sum coming his way is heading towards having his pocket picked big time.

I wonder how many business/property opportunities and begging pm's he has had already ?

Got mine in on day one :D

Buy 2 very nice one bedroomed flats in Wapping Wharf.

I did some self-employed work in an estate management company a few months back and the going rate was £2,300 a month.

That's £4.6k a month........take out the 10% + VAT management fee and you're still clearing £4k a month.

£48k annual return on a £500k investment? No brainer.

if this is a serious question, then i can EASILY turn £500K into at least £5 million in probably about a year and half to 2 years. This would be through setting up "real" businesses with real profit. I am trying to say it wont be anything risky (stocks, forex etc) but real long term businesses making big money.

in fact i can multiply even lesser amounts of investments by 10 times the investment. its easy when you know how :) minimum investment would need to be £20k for it to make those types of returns.

pm me if this interestes you.

cheers
