i think anyone who sets out to self-teach within a field like seo (ie only mid level complexity) will make reasonable swift progress initially.
marketing is much like this as it has maybe only 10 key things to learn to be `useful` to most businesses. However, nobody self-taught will have the skills to get a job in an agency working for coca cola worldwide (much less picking up a contract for them yourself) and this will be true of seo too.
to be an expert at anything takes much longer and requires a very `long tail` of minor peices of skill and nuggets of knowledge. these take a long time to aquire if you self-teach. and some may be impossible to aquire if they are exclusive to a small group of experts.
therefore the best and quickest way to develop in a field such as seo would be to work with and be trained by existing experts (single or in an agency) and then set up on your own later.
if you rely on only yourself to develop knowledge you choose a very slow route and a very narrow range of experience

Many people just learnt about it via trial and error, and then publish books on the subject, and are regarded as an authority if what they say pans out to be true. To be honest SEO is constantly changing, Google is constantly changing its algorithm so what may work now may not work in a few months time, nothing worse than paying for a course only to find out it is obsolete in the long run
yeah that is one meaning of SEO but this thread is dedicated to Small Elf Ownership.
We use the thread to swap funny stories about our little pet elfs.
I just wanted to say to everyone that I've used nitro23456's SEO service and it was absolutely brilliant. Within 5 days, some of the keywors that I worked so hard to get on page one was ranking 2nd place on Google after what he's tweaked for me!

What would somebody get for £50 for one month?
An onsite tweak?
Backlinks? Do you have a little network of high pr links you have access to?
Hi MASSEY, since you asked
£50 is a starting point depending on the níche, what needs doing on-page, what keywords we decide need targetting, the amount of work I think is involved, competitiveness etc etc as i'm sure you would imagine.
I have access to various high PR sources for backlinks, 12+ years experience and also various techniques that I know work, some of which I havent seen mentioned anywhere else. Im not going to tell anyone what they are though i'm afraid![]()
surely £50 wouldnt even cover communication and proposal costs...
I am very much self taught seo - I have literally read everything, i will buy a new seo ebook just to see if there is just one new amazing tip that I can implement in my business.
Still some of the best things we do are our own and no one else in the industry does them.
Just reading the threads on this forum pretty much keeps you upto date with the seo world donesn't it.
Not really, there is a ton of rubbish posted on this forum every day which is a load of nonsense, sometimes, someone speaks up and tells them, sometimes no-one tells them.
There is a much much more to SEO than what you see on here, each time I visit the forum it's the same very basic SEO/PPC questions circulating, it's like everyone is incapable of using a search function or even browsing back a few pages... Nothing new.
One of the reasons for that is because when people use UKBF's search function and try words like SEO, the UKBF search function says there are no results!each time I visit the forum it's the same very basic SEO/PPC questions circulating, it's like everyone is incapable of using a search function or even browsing back a few pages... Would you care to enlighten us with the magic muggets of info, are you just here for the b*tch??
One of the reasons for that is because when people use UKBF's search function and try words like SEO, the UKBF search function says there are no results!
I raised this issue (and solution) a while ago, about only 4 letter or bigger words being included in the UKBF search, but until UKBF does something about it, we are destined to have this Groundhog day format of people asking the same questions over and over again. Even when it does eventually get fixed, some people will still ask rather than search.
If you mean, "am I here to b*tch", of course not. Look at my post count and thanks ratio, I've contributed a lot to this forum and I enjoy particpating on here.
But I'm not going to bullsh*t you, if someone thinks this is all SEO is about, the same old posts about meta tags, nofollow links, keyword match types and pagerank then I'm going to say otherwise. 99% of the topics in this forum barely touch the surface of real SEO, and for many members, they seem to be happy spending all their time looking for quick fix SEO rather than actually getting stuck into the actual SEO and seeing results but that's up to them, it's just why I don't spend as much time anymore replying to the same people as I know some people won't listen to the correct advice time and time again.
You proper got outta the wrong side of bed this morning, or what??
