Hi guys/gals

First post (ever). I was hoping someone on this site could please help me with an order I may or may not pursue. I have researched where I can so need advice from someone experienced, someone who has maybe done what I am attempting to do. I'll start from the beginining

I recently purchased a product from china via a website that offers buyer protection, well the product was still cheap I have now started talks with the supplier directly and found I can get the product a lot cheaper by buying direct. I ordered 50 of these items through the website with buyer protection and the seller even included 5 other free samples of the same product, they have a proffesional looking website and have sent me pictures of there warehouse, stock and even family members?!? Anyway my point is, the products where of good quality and they have given me no reason to think I will be scammed.

The cheapest way to get these products will be to ship them. The supplier offers FOB from Ningbo, wants 30% upfront and once the product is onboard they will send me a copy of the B/L, I then pay the balance and they in turn send me the original B/L. I believe this is nothing out of the ordinary? Another sign of good faith is the supplier offering FOB to a shipping company of my choice, thats good right, I mean the shipping companys not going to except 40 empty boxes, right?

I have now looked into the shipping side of things, FYI the details are as follows: 40Cartons, 2.0 CBM, 500kg. I was quoted earlier today, lets just say it was more than I thought and thats before UK Duty & VAT. Anyway the whole main point of this posting is coming up, whislt searching online for these quotes I emailed my supplier that I would get back to him after finding a shipping company and that if he could reccommend anyone in the meantime it would be appreciated, he did. I mailed his contact and he gave me a much much better quote that anyone I have found in the UK, my concern now is whether this service is legit and I can't get into any trouble if and when it makes it to customs. The information he has given me is as follows:

  • Give his information to the supplier so they can deliver
  • they apply to customs and give me the B/L allowing me to collect after clearing customs
  • The document fees will me 200RMB but tells me not to worry because it will be free with him
  • Tells me the ocean freight is free of charge to
  • When the cargo arrives I will have to pay UK THC £57 W/CBM, ICA FEE £11 W/M (subject to chance) and finaly Documentation £95.50 HB/L
Thats all he's quoted me! It sounds to good to be true and am worried that after driving all the way to collect, the items are either not there or there are lots of additional charges I may not be aware of! How do I work out UK Duty and vat when I hardly even have shipping costs? Won't I need some form of insurance? The Duty rate on my product is 12% and I will pay to my supplier in total about $2000/£1500

I realise that this has been a lot to read but Im hoping someone with experience will see something I couldn't, I have never imported anything in my life and would like to do everything properly with no hidden additional costs!

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I look forward to reading your replies :)

Well,it's really too long.I figure two main things out to let you see whether I am right or not.Firstly, you worry about the other fees will occur when you collect the goods.Secondly, you don't trust the shipping company.
If so,to the first,I can sure you have to pay the freight for the incoterms is FOB.And you don't need to worry about the import custom duty for it is already included in the freight. You only need to take the original B/L to take the goods, and happily enjoy the fortune.
As for the second, you can search on the internet.Or,you don't trust, you can dial the number of your country embassy to search the shipping company informations.
Anyway,I would glad to help.

Give his information to the supplier so they can deliver
this is right
they apply to customs and give me the B/L allowing me to collect after clearing customs
right , too .
The document fees will me 200RMB but tells me not to worry because it will be free with him
I think RMB 200 is document fees in China, if the terms is FOB ,this should be paid by supplier.
Tells me the ocean freight is free of charge to
If it is FOB , you should pay sea freight in UK .
When the cargo arrives I will have to pay UK THC £57 W/CBM, ICA FEE £11 W/M (subject to chance) and finaly Documentation £95.50 HB/L
I suppose others you should pay is VAT , custom clearance cost in UK , and delivery cost from UK port to your address .

"It sounds to good to be true" - well, there is an old sayig that starts with those words!

Paying a deposit up front is not unusual, but, you will be liable for all shipping and UK clearance/port costs, if FOB.

Get your ownagent, there are many you can google. If really worried, get the goods independantly inspected at the factory.

Whilst commenting, are your products EU/UK compliant - CE, RoHS etc?

BTW, 40 cartons @ 500kg, costing £1500 - I would love to know what those items are!

Hi Mooshoonew,

Below is quote based on FOB for comparison,

Freight : USD 110 ROE 1.55 = GBP 70.96
Port Infrastructure Charge : GBP 1.50
Security : GBP 3.50
Presentation : GBP 16.50
LCL Terminal Handling : GBP 52.00
Customs Entry : GBP 40.00
DTI Fee : GBP 4.10
Deferment Fee : GBP 20.00
Import Service Charge : GBP 20.00
Delivery : Dependant on destination.

Total Cost : GBP 228.57

Supplier has quoted as follows :

THC : GBP 114.00
ICA : GBP 22.00
Documentation : GBP 95.50

Total Cost : GBP 231.50

You will still have to pay UK Customs Clearance and delivery in addition.

Buying CIF will always work our more expensive than buying FOB.

Stick to buying FOB, you control the shipping and the cost.

Insurance on GBP 1500.00 will be approx 25.00

Duty is calculated based on the value of goods, plus insurance, plus freight.

GBP 191.51

VAT is paid on the value of goods, plus insurance, plus freight, plus duty, plus all UK port charges listed above, including delivery.

All details concerning order, payment....etc are fairly standard on a first shipment.

You will also need to apply for an EORI number, need any further help, let me know.

The shipping agent in china has quoted FOB, which is basically to collect the items from the supplier and get them on the ship, thats it! No Insurance is included.

When the ship hits the UK you will have a whole load of other fees to pay. Docking fees, inspection fees, customs fees, Vat, admin, storage (beware this one, get your goods out of storage ASAP) etc. etc.

My advice, place a smaller order, still get it shipped by Sea but learn from it. You will get to see all of the associated UK costs and worries, then once you are armed with that information you can start to call other UK shipping agents to get best prices direct from your supplier, you will also find companies that don't ramp up their charges exponentially charging for admin and paperwork fees!
