First flaw is they ask YOU to provide them with the four keywords...

make sure you blind them with science and do your keyword research first:)

That might be bcos they will enter the keywords into a keyword generator, then put them into your site tags, for the engines to spider. At the end you should have about 20ish keywords you can be found under.

Personally I'd not trust anyone other than a web designer to do this, as they'll demand access to your site. Don't do it.

I've just received this mail:

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your time today, I am happy to perform a free trial without any payment details being taken as a special one off. Although the keyword teddy bear and teddy bears will be impossible to rank on the first page in 30 days. What we can do is show you what position you are now for those keywords and in 30 days show you the improvement.

Comments please

Ask them what they will rank you for (and how long it will take) then see how popular the phrases are historically.

ah so you choose the four keywords...they say no...and so on and so forth until you are left with "teddy bear with one and eye and no nose" on page 1 postion 1 of google:D

I'd decline the free trial, reading between the lines of their site they basically post your website on random websites either they own or a subsidiary owns. Also 90 articles a month? All the same article with backlinks and synonyms used through a generator, ouch.

Hi Everyone.

This is my first contribution - Please don't shoot me down in a ball of fire!!!

Just reading through the comments on here and as i work in online marketing I can honestly say i don't see anything wrong with this.

The guy at SEO genie is obviously trying to offer something for nothing, put some work in and see where it goes. They are right that the keywords teddy bear etc are impossible to rank well for in 30 days and they are right in as much as all they can do is Show you where you are now and the show you the improvement

The key with this strategy is that they may or may not make any improvements for the main key phrases your site should be ranking for, but if they do then you may feel like you should continue working with them...

If you are interested in working with an SEO firm then how much they charge shouldn't be the question!!! What the question should be is what kind of return will you get on your "long term" investment and what is that return calculated on.

To sum up - Give them a shot for a month and in the meantime look for a professional agency that can actually deliver results in competitive markets, but be prepared to pay for those that can deliver and prove it!!!

FYI - On the Term Teddy Bears (which is too generic if you want it to convert well) you are currently ranking in Yahoo UK (38) and Nowhere in google (UK/Com)on the domain funkybears.com, however, you are currently ranked on page 6 in google.co.uk for the domain teddybearspersonalised.com.

Can i shoot you down in a ball of ice. fire cost too much.

"HAVE YOUUUU LOOKED AT THEIR WEBSITE"

I wouldnt let them work on its cold outsides website.

This is clearly a way to get a return. How?
Because the only way to improve flyingbear.com would be to work on his content, internal links, tags navigation and improve his titles and then external links.
No way on this planet would that be worked on correctly with in 30 days and for less than £400 expense per week (roughly).
No business will run at a loss. So eventually it will cost him or they will be doing nothing.

I could make a website jump from page 10 to page 3 and say look i improved your position. The real work starts at page 2

funkybears.com looks fine but I don't like the following title tag:

<title>teddybear,teddybears,gifts,personalised bear</title>

I'd agree the title tag leaves a lot to be desired - probably best to go for something a little more descriptive and better targeted like;

Teddy Bears - Personalised Teddy Bears for All Occassions

Only if they're just targetting the keywords "teddy bears" "personalised teddy bears" and "all occasions".

Would the first step not be to identify what keywords are going to be targetted, or I have I missed that in the thread?

I would do keyword research first to establish exactly what phrases should be targeted, but yes this type of formatting would be a lot better.

Apart from the fact that you have spelt "Occasions" as "Occassions", your not trying for a misspelling are you :p.

Also would include singular and plural of the main phrase and establish if its Teddybear or Teddy bear or both that you wish to target.

Other modifiers could be vintage, antique, gift, uk (always a cracker to include on the of chance if your UK based) etc...

You know what i'm starting to think it was a bad idea joining in the discussion trying to offer a little help to someone :)

Simple equation ladies and gentlemen is that the site is about teddy bears, actually personalised teddy bears - if your site is about teddy bears then surely the homepage should be targeted to teddy bears

if you look quickly at the site (presuming you know what you're looking for) you should very quickly spot what the owner of the site is trying to do and from there you can do "keyword research" using teh tool that justinmarch provided once you have a comprehensive list of keywords so that you can identify potential search volumes.

And for Stampy - The site would not be targeted for All occasions spelt correctly or incorrectly - It would be targeted for Teddy bears and also a more targeted but less searched for and less competitive term "Personalised Teddy Bears"

Leave in or take out All Occasions - That's purely asthetic and pulled from the sites homepage.

Oh and Stampy by the way, just a quick question when optimising a website do you only ever optimise the homepage? Are there not more than 1 pages on a website that can be optimised? And woudl you optimise more than 1 page for the same terms

I could actually go on with this but would rather not, I think the post is now moving off topic into an SEO Consultant Showdown :):):):)

I shouldn't think it's turning into a showdown (apart from the fact that I'm very far from a SEO Consultant, whatever one of those is:D), as it's only a few people expressing opinions. It would be a shame if you reacted so strongly to every response given to your posts on a forum - you do seem to be taking the responses a bit personally.

The point was, your page title is crucially important for letting the SE know what your page is about. I therefore wouldn't waste any of that opportunity on words or phrases that I couldn't target traffic on. So personally speaking I wouldn't include "all occasions". I didn't suggest for a minute that you were implying the site was optimised for that, just the homepage title.

We're only trying to help the OP here with our collective opinions - lets not get upset when we've got conflicting ones:)

I agree, we're only trying to help the OP here, and no i'm not as you suggest "getting upset" (LOL). I also agree that there is a difference of opinion and if you're not an SEO Consultant (as part of what you do!) then you've still outshone those that are by answering intelligently!

Your opinion is that you wouldn't include it because it is a waste of "real estate", depending on circumstance i would both agree and disagree - On this occasion I actually disagree, because it should be "easy enough" to rank P1,2,3 for these terms without sacrificing CTR opportunity.

I'm not crying, just yet!!!:)

Ok, fair enough, I'm just used to squeezing everything I can out of my page titles:) I would agree that if you've got the opportunity to make your title appealing and not just keyword orientated then you should make the most of it, as you'll get more clicks as a result of being appealing to the visitors rather than playing to the search engines.

Although, I'd still try and get something else in there - sorry, I can't help it. It's like keyword tourettes.
