Just seen that OpenCart v1.5 RC1 has been released!

*** This is not the final product so not safe for live stores just yet ***

just waiting for it to be a stable useable version as it looks and is amazing. just a few css changes to improve padding, margins etc but other then that it's really spot on.

I did post on the OpenCart forums about the amount of XHTML Validation errors v1.5 has.

ah making it valid xhtml isn't something i think they're worried about just yet with bugs etc toping the list. what i meant btw wih the css changes was just personal preference for me on what it looks like. the features are great (though not 100% working) and the general layout is too, but i don't like things like how the opencart link in the footer hasn' got a margin at the bottom, the add to cart buttons are at the same height whether there is reviews or not.

Yeah I know what you mean, I am always making changes like that which other people will probably never notice

One thing that bugs me is the link structure, adding things like:

yourdomain.com/index.php?route=common/home

to the url looks rubbish in my opinion

Think I found a way to do it using redirects in the .htaccess file.

Those new features are some potential big wins IMO. I haven't looked at this on really, been looking as oscommerce and zen cart mainly. From what I can see these don't have these features in their current releases?
I'm looking at a cart for a site, unsure which to go for. But a stock management system for me is something I need.

I have to confess I don't know much about opencart. Aren't these new features ones many carts have had for quite a while?

Looking at the demo, it has rather unpleasant product URLs

I assume there is a configuration setting to switch them to something more like

or similar?

Also, is there the ability to set up configurable products (eg PC, change video card, memory, CPU, etc)? I don't see that on the demo?

[FONT=verdana, geneva, lucida, arial]ManWithBagOverHisHead[/FONT], you can enable seo friendly url's (or pretty url's) in opencart in the admin panel.

The option is in the settings of the admin menu, under the server tab. This only works for product pages and not category pages and static pages. There are plugins available to add functionality.

Used to but not any more. I was dropshipping the products but the dropshipper decided to randomly charge a membership fee for the service and not tell anyone so didn't bother after that

Looking into other ideas though, but currently working full time so trying to plan it out better

i've played with seourls and they've only come up ok. might be able to change them further but from what i saw was you got one option of what they considered seofriendly and it only applies to some pages.

Once enabled you need to make sure that products and pages have the SEO Keyword Field filled with something.

For example if the products is a Dell Vostro Laptop you could set the SEO Keyword to dell-vostro-laptop

I use an older version of Open Cart for Printing Hull might look into getting the upgrade. I'm not very technical in this area but would the upgrade keep all the products etc the same and content. Or would I have to input it all again and start SEO again?

For instance, somehow although it's barely searched just by having a product called 48 hour business cards we're top of google I think. I think a lot of enquiries come from various search terms that haven't necesserily been targetted - would this all be essentially reset by upgrading?

from what i understand they're looking to have it so you can upgrade so everything should still be there i.e content but still it'd be worth doing a full back up just in case. seo and links wont be changing afaik so whatever you have will also stay.

just to point out 1.5 is not officially released for live shops. it's currently RC1 and i expect it wont be months until it's finall useable. maybe quicker as they work hard but often there is plenty of delays for good reason so expect the worst, hope for the best with opencart.

As said above you should be able to upgrade fine without loosing anything but backup existing site first.

v1.5 is only a Release Candidate so still very buggy. Not safe for live stores just yet.
