Yahoo Answers for link building

Someone suggested to me that posting answers on Yahoo Answers was a good way to build links to a site.

So I've signed up, but you have to reach Level 2 to post links (fair enough)

To increase your level (to level 2 and beyond) you score points by answering questions, so this is what I've been doing (I think I've done the nation's maths homework in the last couple of evenings!) to boost my score.

But do Yahoo Answers links actually have any SEO value - I've had a look at the source code of a number of pages and am seeing rel="no follow" a lot. Does this mean, as far as Google et al are concerned, the links are ignored and worthless?

(I can see how they could be useful from a human point of view if the link is relevant to the question you are answering.)

As with any SEO trick and tips like these, by the time 99% of people find out about them you can be sure that Google did long ago. Generally speaking, the easier it is to get a link, then the lower it's value. Something like Yahoo Answers which I know has people posting links for client sites full time is almost certainly devalued to a large extent.

While dropping links in places like forums, blog comments and Yahoo answers is fine if it's part of your normal everyday activity it's certainly not a 'strategy' in terms of linkbuilding.

Personally if I were you I would be looking at the harder to obtain links that everyone else can't. That's where you're going to find value.

I still get clickthroughs from answers I posted a few years ago. I just put my site in the source bit.

The trick with Yahoo answers is to drive highly targeted traffic to your website by answering questions that will be asked by people who may be interested in the content of your website.

As stated before the link will be next to worthless for SEO but great as advertising!

Careful. Yahoo! Answers can suspend your account for spamming and creating multiple accounts. The users can easily report your answer if they feel you're spamming.

I haven't heard of anyone being suspended for providing good quality answers to peoples questions.

I wish they would suspend and delete the posts of the useless "I want to increase my post count" brigade though!
