I have inherited an office building and the tenant's head office is after an asbestos report. Now I'm pretty sure there is none in the building, and the tenant has been in for literally decades. Also, if a report has been done, I've yet to find it.

A bit of googling and I understand the requirement for one when signing a new tenant, selling the property or undertaking any refurb but none of that is planned.

Question is, am I legally obliged as a duty holder to bring in a specialist surveyor and have a management report done asap, or can I simply say my policy is to recognise there may be asbestos present and will call in a specialist as and when required?

Hi all, this is my first post so I hope I’ve chosen the correct area to post my question.

For the past couple of months I have been in communication with a potential customer for custom-made furniture. For the latest quote I sent, the reply I received from them was a negotiated discount in exchange for ‘good press’ on social media as they have ‘millions of followers’.

We are a small husband and wife business without any other employees, we work a lot of hours, delivering high quality services and products. We’re extremely busy at the moment and unable to take on any other projects for the foreseeable, so we’re not currently using social media to generate new business.

I personally feel rather insulted that the customer feels entitled to a discount just to mention our services when past customers have recommended our services without them asking for a discount in exchange for a good word.

They have tried to negotiate a couple of quotes for different designs and they are constantly amending a design once a new quote has been written up. I’ve found I have spent a ridiculous amount of time pricing up and communicating with this customer and I’m finding it is becoming more and more difficult (even though I’ve had 25 years of customer service experience!).

I’ve written out a draft reply to send them after the weekend but I just wondered how anyone else would deal with this? Any replies would be gratefully received, thank you.

I am currently looking for options of purchasing from and selling to EU.

I have an offer from company in Germany and am not quite sure of the legalities.

They offer a post box address in Germany for a company in UK. They offer also a delivery address (the postal address) where they receive my EU purchased products. They then offer to pack and send my products to my EU customers all for a decent price.

My question is will this save on import and export duties, customs. Can I send my invoice to my customers from a post office box address in Germany and receive payments into my UK company account or do I need to send my invoices from my UK company address.

I was wondering what the rules are on income tax from property when you are living abroad. I would like to leave my employment and move overseas, living off the income from letting my 2 properties in England. As I'd not be employed in the UK, I guess I'd get my full personal allowance. Would there be any other taxes to pay, e.g. on that income when it is transferred abroad?

I have a contact form on my website, but often when I reply to customer's questions using the email address they provide, it goes to their spam box (I'm only just finding this out as a couple of people have told me). I'm using a Gmail account. Would I be better to get rid of the contact form and just have my company's Gmail address they can click on to email me? That way if they 'instigate' the email and I reply, it won't go into their spam? Or does it not work like that? Just don't want to lose business because of this. Thanks.

Regrettably, my business went into liquidation in November after 12 years of trading. I was advised that I could claim for redundancy. However, my claim has been refused by the RPO because I did not pay myself the minimum wage. As a result, they do not consider me an employee of the business, but rather an office holder. I worked in the business for 12 years, apart from approximately 6 months when I was in hospital. Is there any point in appealing this decision? The claim was for approximately £6.5k before deductions, plus any payment for loss of notice.

I am starting an offshoot of my business which will be an online shop selling items that aren't normally delivered by post (as they are fairly fragile). I will only be selling within the UK.
So my domain will be (adjective)(noun)bypost.tld and the trading name will be (ADJECTIVE) (NOUN) BY POST.
I just wonder what the best TLD would be and how many other TLDs I should register. They are all available but it gets expensive when you register lots.
So, if my business was selling purple dogs by post, which domain would be best?

Or, are those domain names too long? The (adjective)(noun).tld domains are generally taken, mostly squatted and offered for sale although the .online and .delivery versions are available.
I suppose my question is: does the UK public still view .com and .co.uk domains as being definitive and reliable, or are they accepting of .uk and other new TLDs?

An employee of mine attended a job fair, and upon the end of the fair they were asked if they would like to do the next fair.
They signed a document to confirm, however did not have the authority to do so.
I explained this as soon as I was contacted and apologised for this. ( the cost was also 3 x higher than we had paid previously)
They are now saying they will pursuing this at small claims court.
I am unsure if we are liable for this given there is no acceptance of the invoice from any senior figures who can sign off such things.

I have a web page that is accessed via a mobile phone that allows users to update stock (qty in stock - for stock taking etc.) I would also like to generate and print lables on the fly (from the mobile.) My web page can generate the bar code and I need to find a label printer (wireless/bluetooth) that can be accessed from by the mobile to print the label.

Most label printers insist on using their "app" to generate and send the barcode to the printer. I simply want a barcode printer that is wireless that can print from a mobile WITHOUT having to use the manufacters app to generate and send the label to the printer.

So my web page that generates the barcode in a browser on the users phone, they then select "print" and they can print to a wireless barcode printer. Any advice / help would be much appreciated.

We purchased a house for our daughter and while it has been refurbed she has married her short term bf, who have moved in a month ago. Now her husband who is from a very extended family has mentioned to my daughter last week that his uncle may be coming up for a few months along with "other family members", he has not asked me and put my daughter under pressure - she has said she will see what I say.. My issue is I do not want a situation where the other 9 people turn up and refuse to move out, as they are in rented property in London and struggling paying bills.

What can I do?

There is no tenancy agreement in place, should I get one and how do I put the exclusion in about other people? I am trying to be reasonable and trying to protect my investment..

I was offered a barn on a farm as workspace from a friend of a friend. The place was quite run down. Just hardcore as the floor, leaky roof, no electrics and was full of rubbish. The outside/carpark area was muddy, full of pot holes and the 3 meter boundary at the rear was totally overgrown. The lady who owns the farm also had an income problem and was going through a family loss. So I started to improve the stable blocks I was using and other units to create usable units which she could rent out to help her. She had also verbally indicated that she was hoping this would be a ten year term for me being there. After a lot of work and money spent (over £10k) I stopped working on the farm because we didn’t have an agreement in place despite asking more than 13 times to sit down for a meeting to agree terms. She then messaged me with a rental amount that she wanted which was higher than simpler units that already had all the utilities you would expect. I questioned the amount and attempted to show her similar on the market comparisons. After a disagreement about rents she had that part of the farm valued, put that section of the farm on the market at £50k over the valuation and found a buyer quite quickly. She has now given me 26 days to vacate as she wants a quick sale!
My question is (if anyone knows): Am I within my rights to invoice her for the works done (at cost prices) to her property bearing in mind I was of the understanding that I was expecting up to 10 years on the farm with a short rent free period or maybe a reduced rent.

I have been self employed fro 10 yrs but have recently changed to a business partnership with 50/50 ownership.
I understand ll the in's and out's of filling my accounts as sole trader but have one sticking point as partnership.

Myself and my partner are drawing £X each day for our wages each and I am currently recording each payment as such in my accounts. The remaining funds are left in the business account for growth. There are no other staff just the 2 partners.

My question is how do I correctly report this in my accountancy books? Do I record it as a wage delectable from the total profit or do I ignore it then split the overall profits 50/50 in the end of month profits?

In the course of a retail business a sale is made in mid March. The customer is then issued a refund, lets say in August, which is after the new tax period has started in April.

If these events were to happen in the same tax year then I'd just enter a line into my "sales returns" sheet and adjust my turnover for the year downwards, which would then be entered onto the self assessment form.

But I'm confused what to do when the refund spans a tax year, if the self assessment for the prior year is already submitted. Should the refund simply adjust the turnover of the tax year that the refund was processed in instead? In a fictitious scenario what happens if the turnover in the second tax year can't support the refund? You can't enter a negative turnover on the self assessment forms, but would this figure just carry on in the accounts until the turnover could absorb it?

Bonus Question: What happens if you claim an expense on a self assessment form and that expense is refunded in the subsequent tax year? Do you adjust the subsequent year's expenses, and what happens again if you don't have enough expenses to adjust?

Please assume traditional accounting, and standard dates for accounting period / tax year. Also these scenarios haven't occurred to me (yet), I've only dealt with refunds in the same tax year, but it's crossed my mind that this could happen. It seems perhaps you'd need to amend the old tax return, but then that promotes filing the return as late as possible to minimise these problems, which seems cumbersome.

Hi, I’m new to this forum so hope I’m in the right place. I have a small printing business & recently created 9 football stickers & 3 decals using football club logos. In hindsight I believe I have broken the law (trademark infringement) & I’m concerned about the consequences. The customer has a company & wanted the logos to stick on their products for an exhibition. The customer also used the MND logo, but I know he had permission to use that particular logo. He may well have had permission for the football logos, but I failed to ask. If the customer has permission to use the logos, does that cover me? Thank you
