Your eBay SELLING experience...

I was registered as a personal seller on ebay, selling all my kids clothes and baby stuff they dont use anymore - put 100 items on in one month and they wanted me to register as a business - a new rule of theres! Just so they can take 10p per item listed instead of free for personal. Im registered as a business for that purpose and always put transactions down on my accounts so regsitering as a business on ebay is not important to me.

The fees just go up and up all the time for sellers making it harder for buyers to get deals.

To cover yourself a bit you can post all your items 2nd class recorded delivery, and state 'no returns' and then it's really up to the buyer if they still want to bid.

I did cosmetics for a while and did alright. I sold 'wholesale lots' to make it worth my time. I started out selling the cosmetics individually, but the time involved with packing up and posting each item (for maybe 10p profit after fees) just wasnt worth it. With wholesale lots however, for each parcel I was having to pack and post I was making a few quid on so it was much more worth my time.

People always complain about the fees but there okay paying yellow pages ad for £1200 and PPC for £1/2K with no sales. Ebay if it doesnt sell you dont pay. If your with ebay your on par with the big boys people use google not to buy but to research and use ebay and amazon to buy. Ebay has an advantage of auction bidding and reviewing seller history where others dont. I make money on ebay and dont mind the fees they are ways you can reduce your fees the more your creative the more you sell the more you pay less in fees.

seems that noone is in business with ebay..

eBay is a bit of a bore for me. An okay platform for selling random stuff on there. I would not really buy stuff on there - over priced items (because seller has to pay high eBay fees) you can get cheaper on the high street.

There are current and new better platforms emerging like NOTHS (notonthehighstreet), eBid, Amazon, Etsy, Coriandr. More and more people are either using the alternatives or have their own website to sell on, or have a market stall. Love them or loathe them, competition is always good. :)

LOL, if she knows your username you may not have a home to go to tonight!

Good job then I work from home. :)

Back on track, My thoughts on ebay and indeed other selling platforms is try them, if they work for you fine, if not then so be it. I know some people find eBay doesn't work for them, for me it works OK if used well and sparingly. Some things do better on eBay than my web site and others do better on my web site. There's a lot of crazy competition and busy fools for whom profit is some sort of odd business concept, don't even try to compete with them.

I've only had one problem selling on eBay, Paypal investigated and fortunately the buyer, who did receive the item then decided they didn't want it and claimed they hadn't received it had already emailed twice to say the item had in fact arrived.

I've noticed the fees have got higher and also that the cap on postage for larger items is often less than the actuall cost by several pounds.

I don't sell as much on there now because of that, its simply not worth it unless you can see the item you are selling will go for a decent sum.

I've come to the conclusion that there are a lot of illiterate people who use ebay. For the most part you get great customers who are very easy. They buy the item, pay for it, and wait till it's arrived at their house. They then leave feedback.

But, for a certain percentage they seem to have no common sense and don't appear to be very smart to say the least...

Scenario 1: Customer buys the item on day 1. On day 2 I recieve this message:
'hi were are my item bcoz i have bought them and it still has not arrived. what happens now???'

Scenario 2: As we all know bad weather has occured recently, which has affected the post. I recieve these messages from the same person:
'hi ya can u explain were my item ios they are for chrustmas presents and if they dont come in tym they are no good?'

I explain that I have sent them via RM 1st class on x date.

He replies with : '
ryt totally understand all that i sell quite alot on here and have had to resort to sending my item next day dleivery or tracked have u sent it this way or just first class as if its lost ull have a hole mission on ur hands claiming it back and im not being funny but im not wanting to wait round until you get that cleared i need them for christmas and thats pretty much the bottom line'

I ask him to confirm his address to make sure the items have been sent to the right place. I also point out that since he lives in Northen Ireland they may have taken a little longer.

He says: '
yea i got all that in ur last message but thats no good to me when there not hear on time i they dont ciome tomorrow i want a refund and wen they do if they do ill send them back absolute joke this'

have so many more examples of illiterate people who seem to love to rant and rave. I know my writing skills aren't the best, but c'mon!

Ebay is an absolute pain in the ass. It can be hugely fustrating with their rules and regulations. But if you can't play by the rules then don't play at all - afterall, it is a good way to make money.

I've just made powerseller & top rated seller, but the whole ebay proccess can be really fustrating. :)

A few bits of advice. I use several things as idiot filters on ebay that gets rid of the vast majority.

I never do auctions.
I have PayPal/immediate payment only
I don't do so called free P&P
I make sure I'm never the cheapest
I don't sell anything under a fiver.

There's also certain categories I'd never sell in either, even if I had the knowledge of the products. Clothing of any sort and electronic accessories, leads/adapters, etc. they're complete idiot magnets.

Yeah, I guess with the more people you deal with the more idiots you're going to come across.

For the most part I have Buy it nows, immediate/pp payment etc. But some people still manage to pay via eCheque on Paypal and compain at the fact I won't send the items till the eCheque has cleared... -.-
