Great to hear you new site is going well. Do you want me to run a free website analysis on it for you. Just one question, what do you mean by it beating Yell on some terms ?

Thanks :)

I have my own script that I paid 400 quid for that will do all the keywords etc that I will ever need :)

My site is brand new but also very personal. I tweet, email and contact new listers.

I offer a very one-to-one service that yell could never do.

I will not mention the keywords, I do my own google search and look where I am placed next to yell - actually yell is pages behind me!!!

Thanks,
Mark.

PS: I also own a DVD of EVERY BUSINESS IN LISTING IN THE UK. If I wanted to set up an impersonal directory, I could do tomorrow with a few hours of importing (and it's more up to date than Yell's!).

I am sorry but YELL.com is the biggest load of rubbish ever to have existed.

They charge anything upwards of £120 +VAT a month. Business think becuase yellow pages, ( the hard copy ) is a good resource to advertise in then of course YELL.COM must be brilliant.........WRONG

The best "directory" is the search engine and is called GOOGLE ( yes guys I know google is not a directory ).

Dont waste you money when they call up and try and rinse you of a couple of thousand becuase its an utter waste!

Just in the last 2 days I have helped 2 small companies cancel monthy bills from yell thus saving them thousands.

Lastly, once you even get a free listing ( that not even worth free ), they will call you lots of times to sell you that upgrade - and when i say lots of times you will ever give in and hand over your nack details or end up swearing down the phone just to stop the calls.

Hey Mark, this is not attack and defend.

I've just logged on tonight and there were some uninformed comments that concerned me.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, if you are an Adwords guru good for you and I mean that. Most of my clients as busy smes don't have the time or expertise like you to run their own Adwords campaigns. Which is where yell and our Google SMS proposition can help, it's a fully monitored and managed service, and is different for every client.

Good luck.

PS I'm a cynic too, but in this case I have the volume of clients and their tracking data to really know whats happening.

scott so your saying ( lets say 500 a month ), paid to go into your directory etc is better than giving it to an SEO company as they would rank higher....please tell me :) nah i think not.

Guys,

You are not my clients, so there is no benefit for me to be here commenting, im not touting for SEO business like lots of the comments rubbishing Yell, but when people are making rash comments about the business I work for it does concern me. I have tried to open a dialogue to answer any issues, but I guess there are just too many cynical "experts" with limited experience on Yell out there to listen to.

Im not saying Yell is a panacia to cure all Internet advertising ills, it is different for everybody, but you need to be fully informed before you slag things off.

My wife expecting a baby this week so why should I use my own time to try
and help people I don't know, ask yourself that, then you can back with another smart arsed comment - again!

Scott, an observation on my previous post would be nice seeing as I was being constructive but you've chosen to bypass it for some reason. Here it is in question form simply put

1. why is Yell.com advertising so difficult to understand and so badly explained by Yell staff?

2. Why am I getting just 2 click throughs to my site from Yell.com but 50 from google during the same time period if Yell works so well?

Congrats! :)

But please don't come on here trying to big up yell, when it is clearly in debt and not very good at what id does anyway!

I see 'Freeindex' has a new slogan 'There's no need to yell...' I am guessing that says it all really.......

Actually my friend, you couldnt be more wrong. I have been an account exec at Yell for 7 years, and what you clearly don't know is that the compact directories have increased usage and calls, that combined with our new range of digital media products is making my life at Yell the best its ever been thanks. All the data on usage is available on various " informed business forums" for you to read, and i suggest forum members do read it, instead of gossiping and listening to ex Yell employees, they are ex employees for a reason, normally because they cant handle the job. The change in size was was driven by consumer demand and years of trailing the compact book, the results of which showed increase leads for our advertisers. 8 out of 10 users want the smaller book and prefer to use it. Fact.

We have also deleted around 1000 outdated or closely related classification, making the book an easier to use.

Some clients make snap decisions based on cost and rumour, I'm willing to help anybody who has a question make an informed choice.

If anybody has any questions regarding their programme with Yell and any of the products we have to offer - Yellow Pages, Yell.com, Net Reach, Videos, Goggle Adwords ( did you know we are Googles biggest authorised reseller in the UK ) or websites, SEO & SEM please feel free to email or ask me,
" a current yell REP"

The compact directories have saved Yell over £1 million quid. The rest of the stats about increased usage, I believe to be suspect. It's very easy to manipulate stats you know.

I left Yell because it was no longer a 'safe' job and the cuts in investment were stunting my growth within the company. NOT because I couldn't hack it and might I say that is a very easy accusation to throw around.

They didn't trial the compact book for years. I think about 9 months in Gatwick is more like it.

8 out of 10 people want a smaller book eh? I think if you asked 10 people if they wanted a Porsche 911, most of them would say yes. Meaningless statistic.

I'm sure you are willing to help people with an 'informed choice' which in Yell speak is an informed choice to advertise with them.

The fact you have even mentioned Net Reach which is in my opinion the biggest advertising con ever offered by a company, shows me you have either no credibility or you really are as brainwashed as you sound.

Look, good luck to you if you really believe all that stuff. The truth is, you had better get out soon. The share price is pushing 7p and signs are it will hit 4p. Mike Pocock isn't going to be letting Joe Sharp Suit drive around in a BMW for much longer and in fact I expect a return to 100% telesales.

You're having a baby? Congrats. Go and get a job somewhere safer.

Australian survey:

  • If given the opportunity, 58% of the respondents would choose to stop having the Yellow Pages print directory delivered to their household.
  • 54.7% of 20-29yr olds said they stored the Yellow Pages print directory away just in case they need it, but have never used it.
  • 61.8% felt the Yellow Pages print directory is having a negative impact on the environment.
  • 91.4% said they search the Internet when looking for a business.
  • 14.1% throw the Yellow Pages print directory straight into the recycling bin.
UK Survey (admittedly carried out online):

  • 17,500,000 unwanted printed business directories delivered to homes each year
  • 35% of British adults would prefer not to receive a printed copy
  • 43% of 18-34 year olds would prefer not to receive a printed copy
  • 70% of 18-34 year olds would prefer to use the internet to find local businesses
