XBOX 360 or Playstation 3

Trying to decide which to get - what are people's preferences?

I'm not a 'gamer' so no real idea, just thinking ahead to Christmas

My boyfriend got his PS3 for his birthday - always keeps him happy while I'm working in the evening! The day after he got his, his mate went out a bought one too! (my boyfriend is 37, his friend is nearly 39...)

So my vote would be PS3!

We have 3 in our house, to stop the fighting between me and kids (i'm the biggest kid)
PS can't compete with legendary games such as Call of duty and HALO.

I'd go for a PS3 (I did on launch day!). The cost is a little more than the XBox but in my opinion the games -where available on both formats - look better on PS3, the controller is easier to use (although thats down to personal opinion) and you have the added advantage of a built in blu-ray player.

On the flip side, as the X-Box is so much older there is larger catalogue of games, and some 2nd hand games can be picked up for peanuts. having said that 2nd hand Ps3 games do seem to be dropping in price as more games are released.

The clincher is the Blu-Player.

The ps3 doesn't require you to buy a remote control to watch dvds (which it can also play blueray).

And overall, im pretty sure that the ps3 has a better spec than the xbox

I had one of the first xboxs so there is no loyal-ps3 bias here

I have both and tbh it much of muchness. The only differences are down to PSN / Xbox Live and the exclusive games, which are becoming fewer. I prefer my PS3 at the moment due to the Xbox 360 reliability issues. I have went through 4 red lights of death so I am now scared to switch it off.

The PS3 does have bluray but you dont need a control to watch DVDs

You don't need a seperate remove to play DVD's on an xbox, you can use a normal xbox controller.

I prefer the Xbox, I prefer the controllers the erganomics are much better than the PS3, if you have to send an xbox back to get it fixed it will cost £60, if you have to send a PS3 back it will cost you £120.

xbox live will cost you about £35 per year, PS3 internet is free.

I don't have a HD TV and I am not really into blue ray, plus you can pick up blue ray players for £60 now.

I would recommend you go with what your friends have, so you can play online with them, otherwise it's probably 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Ive got a PS3 and when I got it I nearly bought a 360, HD-DVD lost the format war, blu-ray is excellent, easy to swap the drive for a bigger unit (on the 60gb models) online is free on PS3 but need to subscribe to xbox live (although its supposed to be better).

Many dual-format games get written on 360 and ported to PS3 so looks wise not much in it, the PS3 is more advanced with its cell processor but no-one has harnessed its potential as yet. PS3 has just added iplayer and can stream divx from a PC.

Personally I think the PS3 is a better bet long term because it is so advanced.

You can stream Divx from a pc to an xbox as well although probibly a little more tricky to setup. (not sure about the iplayer, but you can link the xbox up as a media center to your PC).

I think (but could be wrong) but the Xbox is cheaper to buy, and by the time someone developers the hardware and software to be used on the PS3, the 360 will have a bigger brother and be better than the PS3, where as the PS3 is suppose to be lasting a while.

Both MS and Sony are developing and soon to be realising kit like the Wii setup, although I am not sure is it will be a bolt on or new system.

I would have thought since the PS3 launch it would have moved well ahead of the Xbox but to me it's still very stagnent.

This is a business forums so i will talk of the long term investment.

I have a ps3 so obivously that was the choice i made.

I am a movie fan and gamer so the blu ray was a real selling point (as was the dvd player when i got a ps2 on release).

Many people who talk about the consoles seem to think that xbox gets way more games than ps3 but people have selective memory, there are great games on the xbox that is exclusive and great ps3 exclusives.

The cost of the ps3 is more but when you look into it, you get some things witht he ps3 that most xbox gamers have had to fork out extra for, for example:

Wireless (£40 for Xbox)
Free online gaming (£30 per year on xbox)
Rechargable controllers (£15 per controller on xbox)

This doesnt sound like too much but suddenly the £150 console has cost you £300 over a few years.

 

360 everytime. xboxlive is an excellent addition to your gaming, but the games that are on xbox306 are just awesome.

 

ps 3 for me every time i have had both the 360 broke 3 times and a good few mates 360 have also been back to the mender a few times , the ps3 if free online and works a treat better graphics and a much slicker product in my book

There's not much between them to be honest.

I have a 360 and I wouldn't want a PS3 but that doesn't mean that one is better than the other..

Games wise it's only the exclusives you are going to miss out on. PS3 has Gran Turismo and God of War while the 360 has Halo, Gears of War and Forza motor sport. It's down to personal preference.

The majority of games get released on both so it's no big deal. Blu Ray dvds are too expensive in my opinion and unless you have a 50" TV then the changes are minimal.

Xbox Live is a great addition. Never tried the PS3 online so I couldn't comment.

In the end it comes down to personal preference so what ever one you end up going for will be a winner in the end

Well i have both but my bf likes to play the xbox better as he likes to go on live and the ps3 aint as busy as the xbox on gta4 online and the only good thing is about ps3 is the blu ray.

As far as gaming goes they are much of a muchness.

But our xbox 360 broke down, and before that often wouldn't turn on with the red death circle. Pretty much everyone I know of with a xb360 has had to replace it or fix it at least once. That is the killer issue for me. So we went and got a PS3. I know plenty of people with PS3s and I've heard of very few reliability issues.

Call of Duty is available on both, but online gaming is free with the PS3 and expensive on XBox Live.

I like the downloadable games that you can get on xb360 much better than the PS3 ones. (for example the whole family got a huge kick out of "Kingdom for Keflings" for almost no money.

The PS3 is also virtually silent whereas the fan on the xb360 howls all the time.

The PS3 plays superb blu-ray out of the box (Planet Earth and Band of Brothers are awesome),. No extra remote needed as long as you can figure out the quirks of controlling playback with a game controller so you save the cost of a separate blu-ray player.

My subjective opinion is that graphics and sound on PS3 are noticably stronger, but the xb360 is still a strong performer at both.

The controllers for the xb360 are a little more ergonomic.

PS3 hands down, have had mine isnce the day of launch and never missed a beat (touch wood!) the controller battery life is great, the games are not great, the online network is sorted, and if you aren't 100% into gaming you have the blu ray player to boot

Not much in it really. PS3 has more "toys" but you need to decide if you want them. The XBox is good and is a lot cheaper as a basic gaming machine.

We spend our whole day out playing, and early evenings. Horses, windsurfing, (surfing when we visit your neck of the woods).

But we've found that computer games have taken over from TV in the evenings.

I would personally go with the PS3 as there are some good games that are PS3 only, and you can use it as a blu ray player. I was going to go for one for myself but decided against it as every games machine I have ever bought gets used for a few weeks and forgotten about...
