I went for not having www and have a 301 on my www url to the non www. Does anyone have any ideas why my www url is the one being listed on google? Is this a problem? I think it could be a problem because all my links are to my non www. Will it sort itself out and start listing the non www instead?

Cheers

Did you do this using .htaccess ? Are you sure you have coded it right?

I posted a correct code to use in another thread recently.

I don't know what htaccess is. My mate did it for me when he came over and told me www's are for losers! I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing. Are you able to check it's right? redwood-tints.co.uk. Cheers :)

It's quite easy to check - even an seo expert could do it?

Just try using the www as an alternative to any page and see what it returns - I already had a look for you and it seems to be redirecting ok.

Doesn't matter whether it was done with .htaccess or not really, the fact is the redirections are working fine. Most of the pages Google has of your site are without www. My guess is, maybe Google managed to index the site before the redirect to non-www pages was in place?, and the www versions are left overs. Whatever, I reckon within a bit of time Google will get the right results. The only real downside at the moment is a split second extra waiting time for page to load for users.

Its Wordpress with All in one seo pack installed , Wordpress automatically redirects the www or non www , The site is pretty new is it not ? Cheeky link bait ?

Your site has no back links whether you look at the www or not so the likelyhood is that google hasnt re-crawled your site yet, Last cached copy of the www was 21 Sep 2010 07:02:23 GMT , However the non www was cached on 24 Sep 2010 03:49:02 GMT so its just a waiting game until google tries to follow the www again , at that point it will be told its redirecting .

It makes no difference if its w w w or non w w w.

I always choose w w w.

BUT if all your links go to www already and google sees www as your main website... why mess with it?

The 301 redirect will tell the search engines that it has moved permanently... but I have never found it to be perfect, it also takes time.

To make it perfect, you need to change all the inbound links to the non www version.

Then, go into your google webmaster tools and choose the non-www version.

Your friend has made problems for you, there is no reason to change this, its true that either doesnt matter, but why mess things up and change things...

If you want the non w w w version

Notify google webmaster tools
Leave the 301 in place
Change all the links to the non w w w version.

Any good SEO guy would never take risks like this, for no reason at all.

I was only just starting on the site when he did it. Yeah, wouldn't be worth changing on an established site. All the links I have so far, and my business cards, are the non version.

Agree, for Google it does not matter with www or without.
Just go to Google Webmaster Tools and you will see that it is ONLY for
visual preference and NOTHING else :)

So many people get it wrong... what is important is /index.html and / , those are duplicate content and needs to be sorted out with 301.
