I'm researching a business start up which included selling homemade body and bath products, all opinions welcome.. Please don't hold back..:)

Would you buy it online ?

What would encourage you to buy homemade ?

What would you look for on a website promoting homemade products ?

Anything else you think I should consider?

I'd buy my stuff at the local shop or supermarket!

If I had skin problems, I'd look for more specialised products online

If I had kids with allergies, again online.

I'd consider homemade but wouldn't go searching for it online.

If someone handed some out to me on a rail platform or a shopping precinct on a sunny Saturday afternoon I would try it - if I liked it, I would look possibly to buy it if it was not silly expensive and I knew where to get it with free delivery perhaps....

I used to work for an independent restaurant and the chef used to make his own ready meals and sell them to the clients, and local pubs, they were great and he made a made a nice side line for him.

The thing was they were really nice, priced well, no branding was required, although you knew who made them.

Would you buy it online ?

I wouldn't buy home made products for myself but would for my Mum and Girlfriend.

I would buy online as long as I trusted your business and everything looked kosher.

What would encourage you to buy homemade ?

The smell would encourage me to buy, a strong smell is a must for me. If I was buying online then I'd want a product that you can see is homemade ie the branding

What would you look for on a website promoting homemade products ?

I would be looking for who makes them (you, husband, family members), where are they made, pictures of them being made

Anything else you think I should consider?

A little idea for you...I would love to be able to buy products that say (my girlfriends called faith) Faith's Bath Soap or Faith's Shower Gel etc just to make it that little personal, Maybe you could offer a personalised version of your product?

I think people tend to stick to what they know. If they have found something that works for them then it could be difficult to persuade them to try something new.
I, am one of those! But only because I have eczema and some products have all different kinds of stuff that make my skin flare up and irritates.

Good luck with everything! :)

Would you buy it online ?

Potentially, however the website would need that right vibe which should really give me confidence that it is indeed homemade.

What would encourage you to buy homemade ?

Show me the benefits. Why should I buy your homemade product over someone elses? Why should I pay that little bit extra?

What would you look for on a website promoting homemade products ?

I really enjoy farmers markets, local business markets and so on. I like the rustic appeal of it all. It's not slick, it's not shiny and modern - it's just honest. I'd expect the same appeal from a website if I'm honest.

Anything else you think I should consider?

Nothing as of yet.

My girlfriends best friend left her job to set up a home-made Gluten-Free baking business. It's again very honest, very rustic (being Norfolk born) and quite traditional in it's branding. It's going fantastic. She has a USP in being Gluten-Free and she has the right attitude to match. She's not suited and booted, she's getting her hands stuck in in chocolate dough.

Good luck!

You be sure many people, who can more than afford it, prefer to buy home-made provided it is a bit unique. No one will buy soups online from you, unless cheaper than shops. But if you sale pure olive oil soups, which is going to be a lot more expensive than ordinary soups, online those, who can more than afford it, will buy from you no doubt. Off course this is provided these types of customers can find out about your product easily.

I prefer the quality product. If your product is a good quality product and cost effective for me then nothing can stop me buying your product even if it is home made and is being sold online.

There are many people who don't rush for branded products. They believe in quality !

My advice would to look elsewhere due to the onerous EU cosmetic regulations unless you already have safety assessments etc. If not get some quotes to assess your products and look at your responsibilities as a producer before you go too far.

People now a days are brand oriented. They look for the products which are already well established in the market.

I wouldnt agree with this opinion. As lot of people like handmade production. :) Not all people like to be massive, i.e. buy just brand oriented goods, though they like unique goods, and handmade products are exactly unique.
Personally, I like to Live Green and Think Green, try to reduce, reuse, recycle. You can use 3R by making handmade products :)

Yes, I agree with this! Most importantly is not the brand but quality and price :) For some people just quality (if they have enough money):)
I like to buy handmade products, if they are good: cosmetics, accessorie, bags, etc.

I love more than anything homemade items in fact this year I opened my own shops on etsy and folksy and even storenvy, but the problem was, there was too much competition extra which caused me not to get any sales :(

I wish you good luck but remember, if you need to compete against stores like lush which I love their products but personally i wouldn't use them especially if you know some of them are not SLS free.

I'm sure you'll understand that one ;) Any help by all means contact me x

I think that there's several things: first people just luck the information about advantages of buying homemade goods. Also, it's necessary to find propriate market. I run small business electronic green database www ilivegreenn.com and people really do get interested in handmade goods.
You just need to find your market, and circulate information about your products.
I wish you good luck! If any help, please contact me :)

A big buying point for me is to learn about the ingredients in the soap and their organic qualities. I came across a woman locally who made beautiful soaps but she used many common ingredients that are available at regular stores so I wasn't too interested. I typically pay extra when a company can takes the time to educate their customers.

HI there,

Well, why not? I mean, I'm also a proponent in all-natural and healthy living.

Yes, if there's something that interests me, then I'll buy online

The fact that it is homemade--means it has lesser preservatives--that's appealing enough.

The simplicity of its website but it should also be interesting enough to make me stay.

Good luck

I wouldn't think about homemade body and bath products - if it was brought to the forefront of my mind or sold in easy accessible areas (such as stalls at markets, high street stores) I would maybe go in and try.

I don't think I would buy it online for myself however it may be an idea for a present for others.

What would encourage you to buy homemade ? Nice smelling products supporting smaller companies rather than your large MNE brands.

What would you look for on a website promoting homemade products ? Discount codes, offers and local shops so I can smell and test the product before hand.

Anything else you think I should consider? Sending out tester sachets to potential customers.

Yes I certainly agree with the above FB, would be vital. Your personal website would need to represent you really well. Clean and fresh looking with simple complementary colours. Listing the benefits and ingredients. Giving the goods a use by date and recommending that customers keep them in the fridge will help. As a web designer I would recommend keeping the website simple. Manage the website yourself so that you can update it continuously without having to pay someone but investing in SEO. A lot of people commission a website then think the customers will flood in. SEO will get you high in the search engines when people search for things such as 'natural beauty products', 'natural skin care', 'products for sensitive skin', e.t.c.... There is a decent amount of competition but certainly a gap in the market for good quality at an affordable price.
