Worst Websites you have seen?

If there is one thing that really annoys me about most small business sites its the lack of security, and yours is no exception. going to this page for example http://www.gdfancydress.co.uk/create_account.php

I am giving you all my personal details to open an account yet you have not spent a very small amount of money on an SSL certificate to secure that page so my information is not compromised when I click send.

You can get rapid ssl certificates for less than £20 a year so there is no excuse for not treating your customers information with care.

Not a dig at you personally but its a real annoyance as so many small business sites dont realise how important it is.

^^ Yup :)

On checking the name at the bottom, the designer has no website of his/her own, only a hotmail address. when you google they have a terrible gumtree ad.

That site is wrong on every level, from the background obsuring the text, different fonts and sizes being used on the content and so on..

Clearly they are nothing more than novice, checking the code shows >>
<!--Serif PagePlus 10 HTML Export-->

pageplus is a home user tool, not business user.

And they clearly only checked to see if the site worked for users of internet explorer, it breaks in the most compliant browsers such as firefox, safari and chrome.

Yes, I know, I have taken my comments to far now :)

OUCH!
I remember one of those god loves you websites, it was like the colour of a rainbow with flashing animations all over it, needed ray bans just too look at it and could set epilepsy off

The best part of that website is written at the bottom! It says:

Who is want to come TURKEY I can invitate .....
She can stay my home ........

Hahahahahahahaha

Really?

Yes in terms of design aspects, it isn't up there with the best. But at the end of the day it is promoting a girls hair extension business. It has testimonials, examples, details about the girl (Sophie) and has contact details. It has everything a girl looking to get hair extensions needs.

Sites such as Ling's Cars have proven that depending on the industry, design isn't everything.

My god it's awful. A website like that puts off customers it portrays your company as cheap and unprofessional. You're better off not having a website.

She's not a company though is she? She is a woman offering hair extensions in her local area. Women aren't going to be bothered that her site looks home made, all they care about is that she can do hair extensions. She has proven she can, and provides testimonials and images.

As I said in a previous post, Lings Cars website is proof that the look of a website isn't everything, and I'd put money on it that she is a lot better off than you are.

I agree..you should see some of the websites my missus buys things from, i wouldn't touch 'em with a bargepole but so far..they've always delivered and at great prices, so maybe we know nothing about how people shop :eek:

Well yeah she's self employed and the company is called extension expert. If she's better off than me then it's not because of the website.

It's not the design it's the code I'm talking about. As you said ling cars is very successful the design may be awful but the site is well optimized and it got famous for being so bad.
You can't even read most of this site properly in some browsers: text over other text, font too small, non-standardised text that aren't supported by browsers, no page title, no meta data, no keywords.

Just look at the html header

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html lang="en"> <head> <!--Serif PagePlus 10 HTML Export--> <!--Supports HTML 4.01--> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <meta name="Generator" content="Serif PagePlus 10.0.3"> <title></title> <style type="text/css">

I have seen some pretty awful photos on jewellery websites. I think if you are selling a product you need to have decent photos of it, if you can't achieve it with a light table and Picnik then get someone else to take them.

I also hate sites where the home page is 10 paragraphs of small text which gives little additional information and normally dribbles on about the owner of the business.

Now, I know I might start something here (particularly with the ladies on the forum) but many of the sites you criticise have common reasons for their poor quality, perhaps budget or lack of experiance in finding the right designer but if you had lots of money, great designers and a huge pr team behind you, what kind of site would you design?
Would it be the Christian Louboutin one? (www.cristianlouboutin.com)
Great shoes but crazy site...the guy who designed it "must" be on something...talk about hard to navigate! Also if you leave it running in the another tab while you look at something else (like uk business forums;) the site starts tapping its feet as if to say "hurry up"
I hate it, but I realise everyone is different and many will like it...just not me...sorry.
Let me know what you think.
Cheers
