I have only just heard of this when reading a report that Scotland may implement a similar scheme under the guise of 'CO2 Emissions Reductions'.
I am all for CO2 emissions reductions but this is just a pure 'revenue generation' exercise!
If your business is based in Nottingham, you will know of this blatant abuse of the system. If you're in Oxford or Cambridge, and in business, you may know about it?
If not, Yes, You read it correctly....a Workplace Parking Levy....businesses, (employers or their employees), have to pay a levy of £350+ to park their car in a car parking space that the employer provides.
It doesn't stop there either....if a business has regular visitors - suppliers, consultants, reps etc, and the business provides these 'visitors' with a car parking space....they have to pay the Workplace Parking Levy for the 'visitors' to park!
I didn't know that such stealth, and blatant tax revenue generation was being undertaken by councils?
But like any great 'revenue generating' idea, that can be legally abused by councils, it is set to catch on with other councils around the UK. Oxford Council is pending £100k to 'explore' the option of implementing the 'Workplace Parking Levy'. Harley Davidson, a major employer in Oxford has made their feelings know.
To be fair to Nottingham Council CO2 emissions have dropped, but when you buy a car - you pay tax on the purchase. When you fuel your car - you pay tax on the fuel. To drive your car on the road - you pay Road Tax.....and now, if you work in Nottingham, you pay tax to park your car at work!
And let's not forget that areas of Nottingham are about to be 'looked at' in respect of FRACKING - A FOSSIL FUEL!
So will we see the hypocrisy of local councils when Nottingham Council grants the 'fracking companies' the licenses they need to explore the retrieval of more fossil fuels?
What are your thoughts on this blatant tax raising exercise?
