Working while developing a startup.

Hi folks,

I am currently bootstrapping my startup. Instead of going into unnecessary debt I decide to work as well. Thing is once employer sees on my LinkedIn that I am a startup founder they are reluctant to hire. Employers hiring for basic jobs do not mind however they don't pay as much.

What is the wise way to land a part time/full time job in my field (Financial sales and Marketing) while working on a startup as well.

Ensure that whatever job you apply for is not in the same field as this could look to an employer that you are looking to steal their custom.

If it is for a job in an alternate field, be honest about your position and let them know of your long term goals.

Depends on the employer. A self starter who has the guts to start a business in spare time? There are some who would be happy to take on such an employee. Sure, they will leave eventually - most employees who don't set up businesses also leave too.
In the meantime a skilled resource willing to do something.

Hey!

I did (and am doing) the exact same thing as you. I’m surprised employers are reluctant to hire in your field as seeing founder on LinkedIn is typically a positive thing. They may be worried you will quit leave within a short period of time if your startup takes off.

When I applied for jobs, I mentioned I worked on my own side project (not the same field) instead of explicitly saying “founder” which might make it seem smaller and more likely for employers to take you on. Just make sure if it’s in the same field, your employment contract doesn’t prohibit you.

Hey so this can be really tough and as a recruiter I can see it from both sides. Our clients would always say but they seem to want to do their own thing so why would they be committed to this role and wouldn't want to take the risk especially in a competitive market. I have helped plenty of people get over this hurdle and I am now working and helping set up a business venture with some other people which again can be a good way to show that it isn't just your responsibility as everyone is allowed to do other things in their spare time get in touch and can share some tips :D
