Working as a self employed bookkeeper

Hi, can anyone working as a self employed bookkeeper give me an insight in to what the job in practice involves, what a typical day is like. I know this is very general, but just want some insight in to the job.

Do you work at home or in an office or at customers premises? Do your businesses simply box up all their invoices/receipts etc and you sort everything out, do you send invoices out on behalf of the businesses and they basically leave the accounts to you? What types of businesses are your customers, what sort of turn overs do the companies have and what other accounting services do you offer in addition to standard bookkeeping?

Any or all of this info would be great to know. Plus anything else you think could be useful.

Thanks

I have experienced all of the above ways of working - client premises, at home and latterly my office. Some clients post their documents, some scan and email, others delivery by hand.
In my experience most small business owners will rely on your knowledge and expertise. They may have specific knowledge of VAT rules which relate to their business - eg margin scheme, EU trading, partial exemption - but they would probably expect you to take on the responsibility of ensuring accuracy of accounts records and VAT returns.
Golden rule - don't take on work that is beyond your range of experience unless you are confident that you can learn it.
Most clients will be running businesses which are too small to justify employing staff with bookkeeping skills eg sole tradesmen or consultants or may those that employ very few staff.
