Work / life balance

Looking for a bit of advice here.

I work on site 2 days a week (1 full day and 2 half days) and from home the rest. We have recently had a baby and the wife is at home on maternity leave.
I am finding it hard to get work done now from home... either when I get back in I have to look after the little one till my wife has dinner and does her stuff. Which on my half days sort of eats up most of my afternoons, then I'm to tired to get anything meaning full done on a night. Or on the 2 full days I'm at home its the same either holding the baby or taking them out somewhere as they are bored at home. Don't take this the wrong way I love been a dad, just I need to get work done to get the bills paid.

Just wondered if anyone else has had similar issues and how they got around it.

Much like yourself, my client work has me spending probably two out of five days on average at their sites. The other three days I go to an office that I have rented locally. Yes, this is an extra expense but I've found that it more than pays for itself in terms of increased productivity.

I know that people like to work from home, but I've found the best way of maintaining a work/life balance is to work (as much as possible) at the office and then come home to my young family who can then have 100% of my attention. This might not be true for everyone, but I think that it is probably true in your circumstances now.

Cheers Colin,

Yeah when Im at home I feel like I have to give them either all my attention or see them every hour or so. Which really breaks up my concentration. I do sometime stop onsite a little bit more to get other stuff done but this is not ideal.

If you dont mind can I pm you about the office rates you pay. Would just like to know how cost effective this would be for me

That is completely normal. I think the important thing is you have to separate your work time from your personal life even though you are working from home. Also, the most important thing is to let them (especially your wife) understand that whenever you are working you do not have to be disturbed.

Doing this might take some time. But, after a while they will surely respect you whenever you are doing your stuff. It is still for everyone's good anyway.

I know what you mean, at the moment I am working very long hour days an night and its never ending, and with three children under 5 one a baby I find time very hard. The main thing to do is set your self hours though out the week, and also speak to your partner that she understands that your time away from doing work you will dedicate to the them, work hours you need to work.
