Wordpress v Joomla

Hi,

I've started building a website in Wordpress and really like it but have now bumped into Joomla and think that may be a better product for me. I'm only 1 week in so I wouldn't lose a lot if I dropped WP and went for Joomla.

It looks like I would be able to have different levels of password protected areas i.e members of group a could view content of section 1 and members of group b could view section 2 and then members of group 3 could view content of section 1 and 2. Have I understood that correctly?

I've only been using WP for 1 week but have found it very easy and love the thousands of plugins - does Joomla have the same variety?

The plugins I am using are: Yoast SEO, Paypal checkout, Event Calendar and Paypal Event Booking.

The only downside I found with WP was the lack of ability to personalise the homepage, it's geared heavily towards blogging - although today I have found some premium templates that do allow more control over homepage content and look. Does Joomla allow more control?

Sorry lots of questions there. :|

TY for your help

You can fully customise the wordpress homepage (changing settings and changing the code). Personallly I prefer wp, most plugins are free and lots of free themes. WP is also so easy to use.

Joomla is large, takes a while to get used to the system and a lot of their plugins are paid, even on their own site. Joomla is more of a pig to customise.

People usually stick with a product they know. I use Joomla quite a lot , and as with most things, you know what you need to do with a site, you find out to do it and then pretty much ignore everything else until it affects you.

I setup a WP site about 6 months ago - all fairly straight forward.
It also depends what you want your site to do - articles , press releases and the like - then WP seems to edge, if you want your site to do something specific then Joomla has been around longer so there is bound to be an extension you can use.

I have read an article where identical domains were created in WP, Joomla and Drupal. All the content was the same, same H1 tags , same number of image alt etc - but with no external links.

Google indexed the wordpress site first , the Joomla and Drupal sites lagged behind quite a way. Google seems to love blog content and (allegedly) can detect it and so index it quicker.

After a couple of weeks both the Joomla and Drupal site had caught up and from memory the Joomla overtook the WP site in rankings.

So there you go - clear as mud, all the apps will get you there eventually - so have a play with all 3.

I'll put in my vote for Joomla.

I'm llimited when it comes to web dev (I can read code and get the jist of it but no way can create)

I use Joomla for two sites (www.fireflylondon.co.uk & www.blacktievisuals.com as examples) The first one has a lot more functionality to it and great for playing around with options.

I've also got a Joomla app on my iPhone that allows me to update posts where ever I am(although i need to work on the site more)

Loads of free extentions, some very powerfull paid ones & there is always a great userbase that are willing to help.

Wordpress trumps Joomla simply because of the vast array of plugins at its disposal, and it is more SEO friendly

I'm not sure the number of plugins makes Wordpress better. Wordpress has 12028 and Joomla 6254. It's likely both systems will have a plugin that does what you need. As for the SEO comment, what's the basis for your statement? Both systems allow page level control of the key SEO elements.

It's more about what you're used to and how you like to work. Neither system is 'better' than the other, they are different just like Drupal is different again and Concrete5 different yet again.
