I recently setup a Blog in Wordpress to assist in getting some unique search engine content to help boost my site's rating. Unfortunately ever since the blog has been deluged with Spam. I've had to resort to closing all comments on every post but somehow the posts are still getting into the control panel awaiting moderation. Anybody got any tips on how to deal with this. I have no idea how they are submitting the forms as there is no comment form displayed to submit. Surely wordpress must be better setup than to leave a unsecured form processing script open for abuse.?

You'll need to go back and untick the allow comments on every page which has been published - that's how you are still getting comments.

I have around 20 wordpress sites and I have comments shut down on most of them - people can't comment unless there is still an active form.
Just selecting the option in the main admin only re-sets the default for new posts, it won't unset the old ones.

Thanks for the replies, Looks like askismet is a plugin and it's asking for an API key? I shall investigate further. I did see on a google search that deleting the comments form script off the server will offer a fast and permanent solution. Sounds a bit drastic though.

You can get an api key by registering at wordpress.com. You only need to do it once and the key can be used on any number of sites thereafter.
One useful benefit of this is that you can also upload a custom avatar which will be associated with your login email and show whenever you make a comment on another wordpress blog.

Akismet is a great tool but unfortunately has some problems too. I've read about many bloggers that got caught by Akismet on their own blog so they stopped using it. The thing is that you can't get rid of spam 100% no matter what you do. It all depends on the quality of the blog and on the quality of the people that are reading it. A blog with high quality content will have users of quality, but a blog with low quality content will receive more spam.
