Morning Chaps.

This particular person wants to use WordPress as a platform for a small on-line shop.. selling no more then 100 food based items.

WordPress can be integrated with some e-commerce solutions. OS commerce is fine... not excellent though.
Magento can also be integrated to work along side / with WordPress.

Are there any other options? Has anyone done this them selves? :)

I'm aware Of Joomla + Virtuemart... Joomla is overkill... along with a full blown e-commerce store.. oh - and also aware of "wp e-commerce"..

OWG... thanks :p but I said above ^^^^ I'm aware of that one... it's not ermm 'excellent' really.

It's possible to edit the code so you don't have to pay for the "add ons" - but what happen's when there's an update :) The code may need edited again... that time - I won't be around :)

OWG Cheers :) There is indeed a ton of plugin's which do this. I was looking for something more reliable though.. more development. Something that can be used as a standalone store.. but integrated :)

Thanks again :)

Cheers Jamie - email* coming your way! ;)

p.s - I'm making this.

Have you looked at Shopintegrator? (Member here)
I haven't looked carefully but they claim to be better than Roman Cart which I think is a good base level/vanilla install, so it might be worth having a look at their WP plugin.

I am using the html version on a client site and it's pretty good, I am still getting to hand with it but it's quite easy to integrate and works well.

Not used the wp plugin but I am assuming will work the same as the html version

100 food based items is a lot to sell on a blogging platform. WordPress is a great blogging/cms tool but shouldn't be seriously considered as an ecommerce software in my opinion. If I was you i'd try and persuade them to use software like Oscommerce - could save you and them a lot of heartache in the future if the shop expands.

As long as your not on really poor shared hosting WordPress can handle a shop with a couple of thousand products easily. I have seen WP based article directories with over 30k article, gain, running fine.
Wordpress is so much more than a blogging platform now.

I'm completely with ranks on this. Wordpress is much much more then a blogging platform.

People really look down at wordpress. Thinking it's "small" and for the weak :D Clearly it's not... if you've seen extensive possibilities with wordpress, it can be bloody excellent! :)

I found a solution now anyway - thanks chaps! (this solution also enables a facebook store app, and a compatible mobile phone browser store - no matter what phone you have :) )

once again,

we have just built a wordpress site with well over 1,000 products on that is running fine and we also use wp for 90% of our work as it is such a strong platform. (sorry if bad message, been on here over a year and this is the first time I have used it on my phone lol)

Hello,

Please consider our Shop Integrator ecommerce plugin for adding the online shop to your client's WordPress site. The Shop Integrator ecommerce toolkit will add a remotely managed shopping basket and other store features in to the WordPress website. This means that your client will have a supported solution for their online shop once you've handed over the site to them.

Here's a WordPress website selling handmade jewellery that has been ecommerce enabled using Shop Integrator: http://bykatherine.co.uk/

Shop Integrator isn't tied specifically to WordPress so if they decide to move to a different CMS later on, then all their products, shipping plans and order data etc is maintained outside of WordPress so will move with them. It also means that your customer automatically gains access to new online shop features and enhancements as we continually improve our ecommerce software, without them having to install anything. For instance, we are just about to launch a new version which adds payment gateway connectivity through eWAY to most major UK, New Zealand and Australian banks Internet merchant accounts. The shop owner may decide to start to offer customers checkout through this route as well as PayPal, or switch completely over to this payment processor.

We have a specific Shop Integrator WordPress ecommerce plugin connector that gives you an easy way of using your WordPress dashboard to add the ecommerce features in to your site through point and click. You add things like buy now, add to basket, checkout buttons, in-page basket summary etc to your WordPress site using a Shop Integrator button on the WordPress Visual Editor when you edit your posts and pages and there are various 'Store' widgets you may drag and drop in to the WordPress sidebars.

I got this sorted thanks :)

The system I used was free Has a ton of excellent features - included a mobile store and facebook app store. Support is excellent, and we get to choose the future features / functions :) Nothing really compares with this at all :)

Thanks though :)

Can you provide a link for this shop, I'm surprised a blogging tool can handle e-commerce shop with over 1000 products. Or if you do not want to share the link can you provide examples of an established online shop where WordPress is used as ecommerce software?

I wouldn't regard WordPress as blogging tool any more. It's a fully fledged CMS. Functionality, features userability are all excellent. It's not just for "basic" websites or blogs... Have a closer search on google - you'll be surprised what sites are made using WordPress

Hi there

I've used osCommerce myself (terrible) and Magento (great) but I hear a lot of people talking about Opencart recently, which I don't think has been mentioned in this thread so far.

Maybe you want to have a look into that as well?

Cheers

Jon

Don't get me wrong, I think WordPress is a great expandable piece of software, I just don't believe it should be used to run a large online shop. I am intrigued to see WordPress be used as an e-commerce software and power over 1000 products.
