    I love Windows but I dont get why it wont respect my choices.

    My first annoyance begins during install, it tries to make me signup for a Microsoft account, only by agreeing then choosing a small use local account button can I make a normal account. Why. Why cant the options be the same size.

    Secondly, I turned off Automatic updates, yet it turns itself back on every few days and runs.

    I detest windows 8. Not only do I find myself cursing every five minutes because I can't find anything (why, oh, why was the start button removed for all version? Fine if you're on a tablet, but if you're on a desktop - how do you find anything?), but it's damn well making me feel old. I've been using windows since 3.1 and I was knee high to a grasshopper and for the first time in my life I can't work out how to do what I want.

    It's like watching my dad try to program the VCR - it's embarrassing, and I don't need that from my OS. Given the learning curve, as soon as Win 7 is no longer supported, I'll switch to Linux entirely.

    awful operating system. It's not designed to be user friendly and functional for desktop users. It was solely designed for smart phones and tablets. The whole design brief was to force a current declining Windows customer base to create an outlook account as they are seriously concerned about Android and the growing number of people using gmail and also to try and force all current laptop users to use the tablet/phone OS system so they'd come familar with it in the hope they'll buy phones and tablets in the future.

    Ohh don't get me started on trying to download DVD codexs!!! Granted it's not entirely their fault but just goes to show how their philosophy has changed with regards to desktop OS.

    Still using Windows 7 here.

    Windows 8 has some big leaps forward over windows Vista and 7; like secure boot and hybrid boot. However, with good security practices and anti virus software to prevent bootkits (although this primarily about preventing someone bypassing activation) and most people have SSD drives (not to mention the improvement in processing power and motherboard bandwidth speeds) which speeds up windows loading anyway. Its no where near as slow as windows used to be.

    Win 8.1 made me laugh as I believe they added Calculator and a few other simple tools back, like why wouldn't they include them?!

    B!tch!ng about switching to linux doesn't wash. Its an epic range of software powering most of the worlds webservers, built into routers etc. and of course all android devices are linux kernel... really if you cannot migrate across from Windows 7 to Windows 8, you will find most linux editions as almost impossible to deal with.

    The Microsoft account is annoying, really... but I have set up over 9 gmail accounts solely so I can use android and download apps to my smartphones and tablets... I have no desire to use gmail. Unlike Windows a desktop OS... where you can use it without an Microsoft account, why do I need a gmail account to be able to use android? The biggest issue for me is Google acquired the android project early on (developed it since) and its worse than linux (looking forward to unbuntu and firefox on smartphone)... all android is... merely an opportunity to track people and monetise them by showing advertisements. I never liked Microsoft for the way its run.. but I love Windows (just not version 8); however, its a usable product... creating a product just to show adverts and gain money via in-game purchases isn't a proper OS and its a disgrace to call it open source. I would be happy to pay Google a royalty through the cost of the phone or tablet, so like Apple all apps would be checked first and a significant decrease in their snooping and adverts everywhere.

    It's worth having windows 8 and adding the start button such as classic shell or whatever, because it's way faster, and it boots up and shuts down in under 10 seconds. Not too much else is different. I don't use any of the apps or the metro screen, just use it as we did up to W7.
