All the businesses I have been involved with have avoided the overheads of employees and used self employed people which we develop a relationship with. I always check references and ideally a sample of their work.

I wouldn't outsource referencing because few people will diss someone outright, but a discussion may result in something coming out to influence your decision... :)

Am I making sense this morning :)

ps Survey done!

Done :)

FWIW we wouldn't use this service - I put in the survey that due to current legislation no employer can give a 'bad' reference -(read 'honest') so they are worthless....we rarely ask for references, but prefer to judge at interview and our 1/2 day 'this is what we do - watch/learn/listen' - we find that we can tell more about people from their interaction with us/staff and how they handle situations that arise!

I have fully researched this idea and there aren't any legal issues with it. You could be mistaken or I could. If you are thinking of the Data Protection Act then I have already written to the Information Commissioner who said there is no law against it. I can provide you with the exact letter if you like.
