Not really, no.

Whilst there certain truth in that .co.uk sites tend to rank higher in the UK than .com sites, based on my experience the difference is minimal.

With that said, if your main target market is the UK then it would still make sense to set up a .co.uk website / domain name, simply because it clearly communicates to your visitors that you're indeed based in the UK / targeting the UK market.

a .com is what's known as a "Gtld" or "Generic Top Level Domain" this means that it specifies no geographic location (by default).

a .co.uk is what's known as a "CCtld" or "Country Coded Top Level Domain" and this specifies a geographic location, .co.uk for the UK, .de for Germany, .fr for France.

Any "Gtld", which can be a .com or a .net or .org can be targeted to a specific geographic location (country) in Google webmaster tools, so you can have a .com that is targeted to the UK, or the USA, or anywhere else for that matter.

That depends.

We would suggest you to consider some important points before making your final decision.

First, there is a big difference and it depends on the market you are trying to address. If you are in the UK, are you selling to the UK-based customers, you will get more benefits if you choose a .co.uk domain. This instantly inspires trust from UK buyers (who are more conservative and skeptical than other buyers). Thus, having a .co.uk address is better if you run local business.

The second point is from a search engines point of view. A .co.uk domain is viewed as more relevant for a British audience (particularly with e-Commerce websites) without further investigation and will likely rank better.

As for .com domains, by default they have no country allegiance except to the USA. But you can login your Google Webmaster Tools account and manually inform Google that your site is of British origin. This option is only available on non-specific domains (.com, .org, .biz, .net etc.)

So, consider these points, hope this info will help you make the right choice.
