Why are they asking for the address?

Greetings all,

A company in China owes me money, and have asked for my bank details in order to transfer it. I gave them my sort code and bank account number. But now they want my address too. Do they really need it? I can't think why..

Eastern.

I would expect them to need a name, but not an address.

They might need it just for their internal records, but I can understand why you might be worried. Transactions between different countries often vary in the amount of information needed. They could use Western Union Money Transfer instead? I know that is widely available there.

You don't happen to have an empty account you could use for this transaction instead do you?

Failing that, have you looked into the company in question? They are from China but they may actually be quite well established, they can't all be fraudsters - surely!

Thanks for replying. Strangely they haven’t kept any records of me so far. So every time they needed some info. They’d email me and ask for the same info I’d emailed to them previously. Sometimes twice! I’ve since rang my bank who told me they only need the bank’s address. So hopefully that’s sorted.

Right! They owe me a refund for failing to make my product sample to my specifications and then refusing to alter it – contrary to what they had promised me before.

No one here completed an international money transfer at a bank?

It requests your bank details in full as they need to validate IBAN numbers for the branch and stuff.

Remember that other countries' banking system don't work the same as ours, so the internation money transfer standards need to be able to validate all information before actioning a transfer. It's not as simple as a sort code and account number when you're getting money sent from China.

I think you're all right that it was my bank's address they'd wanted. I emailed it to them but not heard back from them yet. Also thanks for your replies. I learnt something from them for the future. : )
