Who works from home?

Recently changed from working in an office to working alone from home. About 1 week in and already getting bored of my own company! Just wondered if there are many other people that work alone from home and how you deal with the lack of human interaction?!

You must be a boring bugger to be like this after one week! I am a really interesting guy and can chat to myself all day :)

Seriously though the lack of human interaction can be an issue although I am helped because I spend most of the day with the phone metaphorically glued to my ear talking to people.

Networking - getting out to business breakfasts - helped for me.

Why do you think I am working from home now rather than in an office?! My repertoire of jokes is wearing thin already.....

Allegedly singing is/was an important part of maintaining mental health for hermits.. ;)

Well Will, you managed 2 days longer than me! I get cabin fever after about 3 days of working from home. I usually have an office in Glasgow but also work from London about 1 week each month.

I find by Day 3 I'm climbing the walls, pouncing on my poor boyfriend and talking at him the instant he walks in the door, and generally going a bit stir crazy!

Good tips:
- Walk to work. Get out of the house and walk round the block before you start work.
- Have a proper lunch break. This stops snacking and gives you a bit of time to WWILF on the net without it spreading into the whole day.
- Talk radio. Sounds silly but it does create a fake sense of companionship (I know, I'm sad!)
- Pets. Love my silly cat. She comes with me to London and provides much amusement/someone to talk at. Get some odd looks in service stations when she's in the car though...
- Meet someone at least every 2 days. I usually put in coffees/lunches/meetings every couple of days.

I worked from home.....alone.....for about 8 years, it drove me mad.
I now rent a unit at the local business centre, it's great. There is a cafe where there is always some other small business owner to chat to, there are the girls on reception to chat up , lots of activity....and my sales have increased due to nothing else but a proper business address.
Not bad for £300 per month.

Rent an office/unit, much better.

I work from home and can go a bit stir-crazy if I don't get out now and again. I try and break the day up by going to the gym or meeting a friend for coffee/lunch or going shopping. I also do the school run most days. I don't tend to work regular hours, I often work in the evening when the children are in bed.

best thing I ever did was ... set up myself and work from home! The peace and quite is amazing!!.. love it!

I have plenty of client meetings, lunch etc during the day ... in fact I relish a whole day when it is just me and my cocker! I get so much work done without being distracted.

It always makes me excited to see my husband at 6 and catch up with a glass of chilled white or fine french red!

HI

I worked from home for 2 years. It was not for me not the fact that it was lonely or anything like that I just was not motivated enough, got side tracked with watching television programs, sometimes in the winter when I felt more tired had afternoon naps that by 5.15pm when hubby come home from work I had not achieved a right lot so ended up working when hubby watched television.

My my Geoff & Geoff, you two are very... suggestable tonight aren't you haha :D

I'm 3 days in, not doing bad so far, although gave back the 2 dogs we've been looking after for a friend, so may hit a wall tomorrow!

Saying that, one always wanted to sit on my lap, so was detremental to my productivity sometimes!

I do, I was considering a serviced office but opted not to because I'm on the move quite a lot anyway due to university.

I have recently moved, and now have an office that is completely separate from the rest of the rooms in the house. Even though there is nobody else in the flat all day, I find it helps to close the office door, stick on some music and get on with what I have to do.

I think that having a separate room is very important - the lounge/bedroom/kitchen just won't do. It means your not distracted by the TV, and also that you have to get up and walk about when you feel like a cup of tea.

Hope this helps you :)

That is one scary thought.

Why, are you a scary person?

If that does not grab you - how about a full size mannequin (fully clothed of course).

I have one of those for display purposes.

She is scary.

The poor man who came to read the electric meter, nearly had a heart attack - when he suddenly realised he was not as alone in the room, as he thought he was. He knocked into her, and sent her toppling over.

If you stood one of those in front of the mirror - there would be three of you (wow an office full)!

Yes, I work alone, and love it - apart from the dogs, cats and sheep.
