Who to contact about R&D Tax Relief?

Hi,

We're looking at whether we can claim tax relief for R&D (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/randd/) that we carried out last year (and continuing this year) but not sure if we qualify. Our accountant is ploughing through the guidelines on what is and what isn't R&D.

Has anyone else ever spoken to HMRC about this? Who did you talk to - was it your local corporation tax office (ours seems forever too busy to let us wait in a queue) or is there some central number we can try? Feel like I'm on a tour of civil service departments...

There is a guidebook to let you know how to do this. Depending on the size of your company it shouldn't be a problem. It is at hmrc.gov.uk, sorry can't post the direct link because im a new member!
