Please can people tell me which stages in a business social media marketing has proven most useful.
For example: Starting up, expanding or introducing a new product.
Any personal experiences or opinions on this would be appreciated.
Thank you

To be honest, I use social media marketing a lot to promote my services, and the services and products of my partners.

Out of everything I do, the only social network that ever brings any genuine customer interest is Linkedin. And the responses are still not amazing, we're talking maybe 15 queries out of 1,100 people that get the promotion.

However, if you have a global customer base, and have a good reputation, then paying for promotion on twitter works extremely well.

On the other side of the scale, business networks are magic. From starting up to established companies, it's prime hunting grounds for bringing in local and national business. Unfortunately, it doesn't work globally yet, but maybe in the future.

There is another type of internet media which can bring results, but it takes effort, and you need to learn how to use it. User generated linking, like on pinit, reddit or a few other well known linking sites. It's difficult to build a following on these however, as you need to share quite a lot for very little interest. But an American actor has proved how useful they can be, by outranking Tom Cruise on imDB after promoting various articles on reddit.

If you're looking for leads and prospects early on, I'd suggest the old fashioned networking route, and then building a strategy for placing your product in front of the people that would buy.

I totally agree with the post above.

If you have a new product, have just started or just want to increase your presence, the only time to get moving with it is as soon as possible!

Frankly, depending on whether you are a B2B or a B2C business you are likely to see varying results. LinkedIn is a B2B service and leads that come from it (in my experience) tend to be genuine, if you are using the network how it is intended.

Other social media sites are slightly different. Although there are millions of consumers on them all seeming like an untapped opportunity, in my opinion they are on the site for social purposes, not in buying mode, so bombarding them with ads doesn't always work.

However, as a brand marketing tool, all social media sites are handy. But your brand needs to be strong and your management of the social media needs to be well organised, regular and (most importantly) of interest to the readers.

Hope these comments are helpful.

Personally speaking....... and here I go opening up myself for a total slamming

I dont even consider Social Media untill a business is up and running....

I create and sell digital products online, each product is practically a new business and I never waste time in Social Media until I am up and running with a customer database.

There is too much to get done and Social Media takes time. Time to find and create a following of loyal customers and raving fans that are eager to spread the word of my latest product.

I usually focus on making the sales first and when I have sold between 500-1000 units I then create a Social Media presence and 'invite' my new customers to joining whatever profile I think fits.

This allows you to then start leading your customers and gives you an opportunity to encourage them to tell others.

This works like a champ time and time again.

I am not saying it is the right way - there is no right way. I am saying this helps me stop wasting time, focus on whats important and then lever Social Media as needed.

Think about it - what are you going to do? Follow a load of people of twitter, befriend people/ strangers on facebook?? Connect on Linkdin etc....

Focus on getting customers - build your data base

Then launch your Social Presence and get them to join.

This is the difference in getting 1000's of shares overnight from one simple mail out rather than wasting 1000's of hours trying to get the same affect.

Good luck

Social media should be used at every stage of marketing a business as long as its used as part of an overall marketing strategy. It is a great awareness builder as long as you have something to share. Social media won't work for any business if it is only used for communicating sales messaging. You must have substance and use it to establish yourself and your business as the expert and authority on the product or service on offer. Once the business is more established you can use it to communicate and engage with customers.

Indeed, social media works at every stage. I have an example of a very good friend of mine - she created her page on FB about her cupcake business - in few months she employed another person to help her with orders.. on the other hand big names use social media a lot , for instance Starbucks

Every stage of social media has proven and tested when it comes to marketing through online. Some marketer as of now will probably prefer to online, one of the reason is they will easily get things when the start to shop in an online through social media.
