which shopping cart?

Hi,

I am looking to build an ecommerce element into my site, and have been trawling through the plethora of shopping carts available and wanted to get your thoughts on what is the best option for my specific requirements.

My site is going to sell specialized footwear, around 50 products approx, I would only need 1 image displayed for each, with a colour swatch to show options. I plan to use a 3rd party payment system (PayPal probably), although would like the option of moving to a merchant account when volumes dictate otherwise. It's important that I can easily update stock levels myself and that the cart integrates with my own html/css design. I also plan to have a French version of the shop running alongside, although I would need to have separate access for this as stock control would be handled by my French partner.

Having a level of support is important so don't mind paying for the cart, although I don't want a hosted option. I would prefer to host on my own server.

Would really value your thoughts on what are the best options for me.

Hi there and welcome to the forum,

I do not personally have that much dealings with shopping carts so can only really go off what our customers use and recommend.

Open Source carts such as Free Webstore, Magento and OpenCart are proving very popular with our merchants and as they have large and active forum communities you would get significant support from fellow merchants as well as administrators/developers on there. They also have payment modules should you set up a merchant account. Incidentally, we have free payment modules for each of these carts as well as many others.

There are also a number of developers on this forum who will be able to come up with some options for you. I would recommend speaking to Joseph of EdmondsCommerce who is an active member on here.

A new version has just been released also with some fantastic features.

I went through many hours of research on this kind of thing for small numbers of products. More than simple Buy Now buttons needed but less than a fully blown cart.

I settled on Prestashop - designed and made up in France, so that might be helpful for you? Direct Support is poor, but there is a lively Forum with many people offering help and developing add ons for the basic free cart.

My shop is in the early stages and being used as the sales part of my Tele-Prompt site, but you'll get an idea of how it can be used - see Prosoft Digital Shop I paid for a template and a couple of additional enhancements, such as the cart automatically recognising the country of the visitor and adjusting the currency accordingly. So folks in the USA see prices in US dollars, those in Europe automatically see everything in Euros.

So it's working well for me and, from what you say, I think it would for you. Worth a look anyway see Prestashop

Interspires BigCommerce is good. Easy to use with good standard features. Depends if you want 'free' open source with the need to hire an expert for £xxxx or go for a paid monthly solution that you can easily do yourself.

Hi

Agreed Magento is excellent however there are other carts available that would do the job.

Zen cart is a decent shopping cart also and has a lot of addons.

Actually these are currently the only two shopping carts I would recommend.
