Products.

Sell products people want or need and they will find you.

Marketing is an accelerator but it's not the be all and end all.

Marketing is a business tool much like accounting or customer service. Good desirable products in the market you are selling will sell themselves. Marketing is a channel to help you do that. It is not precursory especially if you have a client base or contacts.

I am being "loose" with the term marketing here :)

marketing hands down!

you just have to look at the IM products out there - most are very bad products yet the marketing is amazing.

and dont get me started on mobile phones - hype always wins

boo.com spent 86 million in marketing........so historically i'd say a solid product offering wins.

Apple is the obvious exception :)

If your marketing is great but your product is bad you might have a steady turnover of customers.

If your product is good but your marketing isn't great, you are more likely to have a loyal customer base.

So, I think it depends on your business... I once worked with a company who had the best marketing venture I had ever seen- they brought in over 2,000 leads per month and many of those signed up for services. Few of them continued after a couple of months though so the marketing was essential to make up for the poor product quality.

I went for years without any marketing because my services were good enough to bring me business by word of mouth. Could I have made more money if I had also dedicated (more) time and resources to marketing? Of course! But then, not being superhuman I made the call to try and squeeze a bit of "life outside work" in there too. ;)

I think product is crucial, but at least have a basic marketing plan in place to keep the leads coming in.

Good luck with your venture!
