I designed, & currently manage, a small ecommerce site called Prometheus Bound Books. The current ecommerce offering is completely bespoke because of the nature of the products & how customers can customise each item. I'd like to see if I can find a better solution, one that is well established, that will potentially suit the site's needs.

Let me try to give you a little taste of how the site currently works: there is a huge list of books (around 900) which are all categorised by type (fiction, non-fiction) etc, that can be bound in around 13 different materials. Each material has about 8 colours to choose from also.

The books can then be personalised with:
  • messaging on the front or back
  • initials on the front
  • the colour of the messaging can change from gold to silver
  • a heart design can be added to the front cover & if the customer wishes, the front initials can be placed inside
  • a message can be written on a bookmark
  • orders can have gift boxes

The shop also offers products, special offers & discounts.

Visit the site at prometheusboundbooks dot com

Any & all suggestions are welcome.

:)

mrmartineau, just out of interest, if you currently have a site which can do this, what is the motivation for changing?

To answer your query, Magento is indeed able to do what you require, as could our in house built eCommerce platform.

I am curious as to the reason for your question...what are you trying to acheive?

The current system is weak to say the least. Each new feature has to be custom coded & output of the shop's data is very hard to manipulate. Promo codes are very limited, only offering limited types of discount.

The main issue is that there isn't even an admin area at the moment so adding, amending is done directly on the database which means my clients need me for everything that they want to change.

I would like a robust, secure & clever system that will help my client's business grow & Magento looks to be a contender, what with all it's extensions etc

OpenCart. Would be perfect for this. Magento can do this but my opinion is it is over the top but that is just mine.

Most people on here here have different opioions about ecommerce platforms and there is know right but if there is anything we can do to help just let us know :-D

Jamie, I am very interested in how OpenCart could be used, or indeed Magento for that matter - it is why I asked, previously, how Magento might be used. This site has a very non-conventional order process so I'm wondering how it could be achieved, especially as you say it would be perfect. Is there any chance you might be able to describe how it all might work? Can I email you?

Joomla and Virtuemart can also do this and is far superior than Magento or other systems as it is only part of a massive CMS which gives you the ability to expand in any direction to any scale. Magento cant do this.

If you want to add a blog, forum, gallery, support ticket system, extra forms... you cant, you need to bridge in another system... usually joomla or WordPress. But as word press is in the same boat as Magento (a system designed for one thing and cant do them all), you may as well just start on the system you want to use in the first place.

This coming weekend is the annual Joomla Day UK in Microsofts Head Office in London, where all the main players including the team leader of Virtuemart and the president of Joomla will be attending.
www.joomladayuk2011.org

Go along and they will show you how it works and answer any questions you may have. On the sunday there is open workshops, so you can ask for your specific issues and they will show you how it can be created or done.

All the best

I think Magento is a very powerful eCommerce content management system that provides with the perfect tools to manage the online store. Magento provides with efficient features that enables the user to manage the online store so as to gain the maximum profitability and efficiency. The best thing about Magento hosting is that it offers multi-store management that enables you to create and manage several stores of the same product. Along with user friendly design, Magento hosting also offers with a shopping cart software, easy checkout functions. This enables you to provide the user with the perfect resources to manage the online store well and offer a great shopping experience to the customers.
