Which e-commerce provider?

Awebapart,
The main issue you raised with Rentacart was there is no auto-thumbnailing feature. Is there a way of getting around this? If I downloaded one of the many free software on the Internet that would make my images into thumbnails, and then I posted these images, would that get around it? Or would that not allow me to have a larger image available when the customer clicks on the picture? Or can I have both?

Jim

Just to Clear things up....

There is an auto-thumb-nailing feature for rentacart / zen-cart sites.

It is available on the zen-cart forum called 'image handler'

If you look at http://www.modmycart.com/1371/ you will see an example:

Only one large image has been uploaded, but when it is resized you notice you don't lose any quality.

James, thanks for the link. To clear things up further, the link is to a shop modmycart which uses the rentacart platform and does use autothumbnailing.

So it looks like autothumbnailing is now working on rentacart, and my earlier comments in this thread about it not being supported are now out of date. This wasn't the case a few months ago when I was trying to help another rentacart user:
www.startups.co.uk/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=140955
and perhaps it is a very new feature that rentacart have recently added, judging by a knowledge base page on the site:
www.rentacart.co.uk/zone/knowledgebase.php?action=displayarticle&catid=1&id=16
"In a future release, this will be more automated with options for auto-generating the thumb and medium based on dpi, height, width and compression ratio"
It looks like they were planning to add it some time.

This brings up a couple of interesting points when choosing a hosted managed ecommerce platform:

1. a good hosted managed platform route is one that is continually being improved, this is very different to getting a one-off custom bespoke developed solution and is one of the great advantages of selecting a hosted managed service

2. when you are thinking about a hosted managed service, even if you think that it doesn't provide a particular feature you need, you should still speak direct to the supplier, since they might be planning to add that feature very soon - the supplier knows more about what is going on with their service than anybody else - the supplier should be able to tell you more than can be worked out by looking at client sites, online demos, and asking for other people's views (which can sometimes be based on old information/versions).
