When 'tweeting' becomes relatively useful?

On a personal level, twitter has made me a very, very happy man.

After 'following' twenty or so of my favourite design and marketing magazines/agencies/companies/blogs, I now have instant access to hundreds of links to articles and news posts of relevance to my interests.

On a business (or at least marketing) level, I'm still waiting to see the opportunities reveal themselves.

It's a great resource as a Graphic Designer but as part of a marketing strategy I'm finding it hard to 'break through' and get Jigsaw_CCS on twitter recognised and followed.

One tool I found today is twibs.com, a twitter business directory, that as far as I can tell, lacks any substance. (I searched for businesses in Leamington Spa and it returned one result).

So, I will pose a question
– Has anyone had a positive experience with twitter, specifically with connecting with other local business, and do you know of ways to better utilise the website to work for you rather than taking a 'wait and see' approach?

I look forward to your comments and discussion!

i encountered twitter as a cynic but am now a happy twit. i love the rapid exchange of ideas, articles, news and the connectivity with customers, peers, your mum. has it won me any business? not yet though i'm connecting with local businesses and sharing ideas and opportunities. has it enhanced our business? definitely. Having got past my initial obsessive use i now access twitter <30 minutes per day. I probably spend more time waiting for the kettle to boil.

We have just secured some business with one of the UK's leading Twitter experts just through us commenting on one of his posts. I was a sceptic on the whole format but it is surprising what just one little remark can bring if you interact with the right people on there

The business we secured might actually be of interest to all those still undecided on Twitter actually...and best of all it is free!
