What's the best email marketing service?

N

Nick Jones

Hi all,

Can anyone recommend a good email marketing service? Someone recommended Aweber to me, but I wondered if there were any cheaper/better ones out there...

Cheers,

Nick

Mail Chimp is really good. It does all the tracking/bounces/etc. the only thing is make sure your data is good. Some people I know "came across" a big list of UK Businesses...when they sent the mail out then the bounce rate was so high Mail Chimp closed their account.
I know it might seem common sense but just make sure you have good up to date "opted in data" otherwise you might be in trouble.

Mail Chimp
Put a link to a video (to something useful) and get a 15% hit rate (we did for a company *********)
The mailing list they gave us was a tad unsolicited, and still 15% is way and above a normal hit rate.

And with Mail chimp we still have the stats. :)

I've research quite a few through work - specifically those aimed at SMB as opposed to larger enterprise providers such as Responsys.

I found that there are several good options; priced roughly the same over the long run with broadly similar functionality and results. These were the likes of MailChimp, iContact, ConstantContact, ExactTarget, dotMailer etc.

The good thing from a buyer's perspective is that many of these offer free trials or free usage altogether. This means you can try out these services and move providers relatively easily - much like you would with other SAAS software.

iContact was decent, but their inboxing rates are not the best. It's easy to use and schedule, and one of the better choices.

MailChimp seems cludgy as heck, particularly for those of us who have our own html templates. If you need to build a newsletter from one of their templates, then it might be a breeze.

Lyris is solid for higher volume users. Good features all the way around and excellent end to end campaign tracking.

At the moment, we're using GetResponse. Good pricing and easy to paste in our newsletter, upload and link images, import contacts, preview in various email clients and then send away. By far the most intuitive system.

If you need autoresponders, like for email step by step training courses, then Aweber is hard to beat.

When you decide that blasting quarterly newsletters isn't getting the results, consider looking at lead nurturing systems (marketing automation) which drip emails to prospects and clients, based on their needs and sales readiness. Pardot is a star, though HubSpot isn't too far behind.

Nick,

Don't be afraid to call up an ESP you are thinking about and ask some questions. First determine what your goals are and then list what features/tools you will need to reach them - prioritize the list and then use that as your guide.

Obviously I'm completely biased as I'm the community director for GetResponse, but take my advice on that list exercise -- choosing an email marketing provider is one of your most crucial decisions. Find the one that suits you best.

Regards,
jim

The biggest problem most of my clients found wasn't finding a service/system to use but finding the time to do it.

With all the right intentions, they set about doing, say, a monthly newsletter/e-shot but after 3-4 months it soon fell down and became sporadic to non-existent.

Biased I may be but outsourcing can guarantees it happens. And being such an important and integral part of one's marketing, guaranteeing it happens should be pretty high up on the list.

if you use wordpress you can use the e-mailer in that when sending newsletters out - it's completely free. I don't think it's any good for massive lists - but if we are talking about hundreds then it's a goer..if you go to my website and click on newsletter to sign up - you can see the process from a user...i'd have to make a video on how to send out mails using wordpress in the backend - but it's not that difficult.

i ahve used aweber in the past - but i don't think it was worth the monthly costs to stay with them - probably would be if you had massive lists.

We use Pure360 which is working for us as you can just do a rolling monthly contract. You can get a free demo on their website pure360.com. Just software they don't rent out lists...

It's hardly a surprise you use your own service... 'We use'. Pah! Crass spamming at best.

I've got a question I was going to post independently but it should be helpful to all (so not hijacking the thread!).

I previously used another service mentioned here and delivery rates were poor, even though I'd run the campaign through their filters to ensure the lowest spam score possible - I noticed that when the service provider's own promo/newsletter emails came through to me, they were flagged as spam, which wasn't a great sign. Do different service provider's servers have better/worse 'reputations' or is the flagging down to my own domain's reputation?

First time commenting (after being a mostly-invisible member a few years back)! Hey to all.

I've only ever used Mailchimp - very easy and pain-free. Think it's been mentioned, but free up to 2k subscribers, if memory serves. I also use Sidekick to track emails from Outlook (shows you who's opening, what links they've clicked etc - makes my job much easier!
