What Laptop?

    Hi Everyone,

I need to invest in a new laptop, I've had mine for 4yrs now and it struggles. I do need lots of RAM, big screen, good size HDD and dedicated graphics as I deal with a lot of large files (PVC Banner artworks sometimes as much as 1gb files). I've been looking around and there is so much choice, I want a good reliable brand.. good battery life would also be an advantage any suggestions??

    Thanks

Does it specially have to be a laptop, because I'd be tempted to spec up a professional desktop rig with SSD/HDD combination for newer/older files respectively. Bottle necking now-a-days in computing is read/write speed to the disk, so opening/saving a 1GB file from a SSD will be hella quicker than a HDD, but you wont find both in a laptop...

Honestly, sounds like very bespoke job, not sure if a laptop will do it properly enough for you, unless there's a specially portable GFX design orientated laptop manufacturer or two out there.

Always a difficult decision, based on my own experience I have found my dell laptop to be very reliable and purchasing peripherals for it has been easy.

I also use large images and graphic design software and have never experienced a slowdown in my system speed. My spec is:

    Windows 7
    3gb Ram
    500gb hard drive
    Intel Pentium dual core processor

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for all your replies, I've seen this, looks like it should do the job??

    TOSHIBA Qosmio F750-10Q 15.6"

The laptop is good, but personally I wouldn't want MS Windows 7 Home Premium, as it misses quite a few features that are handy in a business environment, with probably the most important one being Disk Encryption, and being able to join a Domain.

For speed and reliability it has to be Lenovo. I quite like Sonys but after experiences with Dell I wouldn't touch Dell if you paid me !!
I write business application software and do lot of big database work so speed is crucial

For your intended use I'd be tempted to look at the Macbook too tbh, or at least think about changing the Toshiba you were looking at to a 17" screen model (if you intend to stick with Windows laptops). I like the Toshiba range, they are quite hardy, and we get less of them in for the more 'silly' repairs.

If you are looking to buy a machine of that range, definitely shop around, PCW will not be the cheapest for it by a long stretch. We have access to the Toshiba range ourself, so will happily provide a quote if you drop us an email.

go for macbook, you will not loose, and you can always install windows on it when needed. Quality of materials used it excellent, battery as well, i worked in an store with computers and macs were those non problematic (not that much servicing, repairs, bugs..)
